Pros and cons of private prison
Student name
Institution
Date
Walking in a private prison and working as a correction officer, perhaps without any experience was one of the bravest actions taken by Shaun Bauer. Dealing with prisoners is a hard task, therefore; it requires a lot of sacrifices. From Bauer experience in prison, bellow is the pros and cons of private prisons.
Pros
They perform better. There is a contract between the governments and private prisons; therefore the firms know that if they don’t deliver the deal might be canceled; thus they provide better services to the prisoners. A private prison helps a lot in generating some income to the community (Shefer & Liebling 2008). The county government can agree to pay for the prison services, while the federal government can take up the role of filling up. Later the county government can create jobs, collect tax revenues. The private prison can be left in charge of the facility while still getting some benefits from the profits made (Liebling & Arnold 2005).
Cons
One con of private prison is the cost of running the facility. The amount the government spends on the firms is enough to run a public jail. Factors like low labor cost will affect the performance of the prisons (Perrone & Pratt 2003). Another con is the dependency. A government can trust a private firm to run the prison, and this can lead to more operation cost. The firm can decide to “lowball” their initial bid at a higher price as they know the government is dependent on them (Hodson, 2008).

Private prisons also can lead to more escapes and violence. Low training and staffing levels in these facilities often leads to fights and attempted escapes by prisoners. In one of the rooms, a prisoner told Bauer that “Inmates run this bitch” Which means that the management had little control of what was going on inside the prison (Bauer, 2016).
Response 1
Janelle’s article is obvious and straightforward to the point. He talks about how inmates are not only violent to themselves but also to the warden officers. By spending more time in the prison, the more Bauer felt like a full guard and not like a journalist according to Jenelle. On pros and cons, the writer names and explains them in a straightforward language.
Response 2
Cleo starts the paper by first giving a personal view of the article by Shaun Bauer. He says that he is overwhelmed by the Bauer experience while in prison. I also agree with him since after reading the article it moved me. The pros and cons are well listed and explained meaning that Cleo took time to do thorough research on the topic.
