In basic terms, coercion is an action undertaken by any particular party to induce a specific action from another party. Though it can be done through different methods, deterrence and compellence form the basic methods of coercion. Since its formation in 1945, the United Nations has over time applied the methods of compellence and deterrence to neutralize and solve global issues across various countries. First and foremost, in an attempt to evaluate the performance of these methods of coercion used by the United Nations, it is relatively important to get some closer insights of their meaning. In this case, deterrence refers to the act of discouraging an individual or a country either by instilling fear or proposing severe consequences in an event the action is undertaken. On the other hand, compellence is a combination of actions or positions that coerce a party to undertake a particular action, failure to which the party will face severe consequences (Frieden & Lake, 2015). 
Over the recent years, the United Nations has actively applied the deterrence and compellence and deterrence measures to solve global issues. In some instances, these measures have proven to be highly effective while in others they have revealed minimal outcomes. However, in various cases where these methods have been applied, it is crystal clear that the outcomes have been highly effective.

In particular, the undesirable political and war issues in African countries, ranging from the Central and East African region have been solved by the United Nations through deterrence and compellence methods. In a way, these methods have had a huge impact on the resolutions of the issues in these countries.
In conclusion, it is relatively clear to state that the employment of deterrence and compellence measures by the United Nations to solve global issues has been highly successful. Countries which include, but are not limited to Somalia inter-state conflict, Kenya, Eritrea-Ethiopia conflict have benefited heavily from these measures by the United Nations.
