Do Our Differences Define Us?
As human beings, our differences define us. These differences bring out our uniqueness. If human beings did not have any differences, then everyone would be alike. In this case, our differences reveal who we are as human beings. Moreover, if we did not have differences, then we would all have the same personality. It is just like the different music genres. We are only able to distinguish the types of music based on their characteristics that correlate to our unique taste and preferences. The same case applies to human beings. In essence, every person has differences that reveal their personality and distinguishes them from other people.
From the play, Romeo and Juliet two important quotes support the notion that our differences define us. “Part, Fools! Put up your swords; you know not what you do” (Shakespeare 17, Act 1, Scene 1, Line 76). The words in the quote originate from the conflict that arises between two families, the Montague and the Capulets. Benvolio, on the other hand, was trying to resolve the conflict between the two families, and Tybalt saw this as a threat. Moreover, he is Tybalt is quick to kill Mercutio without stopping to think “make it a word and a blow” (Shakespeare 17). At this point, Tybalt is seen as being impulsive and rash because he attacks Benvolio.
The nurse is defined by her capability to love from the second quote. She takes care of Juliet as if she was her daughter as stated in Shakespeare (64) “Thou wast [sic] the prettiest babe that e’er [sic] I nursed.

An I might live to see thee married once, I have my wish”. Her love makes her so protective of Juliet. “if you should deal double with her, truly it was an ill thing to be offered to any gentlewoman, and very weak dealing” (Shakespeare 97-99). In this quote, Mercutio does not believe in love. He makes fun of Romeo for having a dream about Rosaline saying that dreams are “children of an idle brain” (Shakespeare 99). He also taunts and teases Romeo for being in love and makes extremely vulgar sexual remarks of the ladies he is in love with “if love blind, love cannot hit the mark” (Shakespeare 33). His character trait is similar to Tybalt who is not even compassionate because he resolves to conflict at the slightest provocation.
However, Romeo and Juliet believe in love and are willing to go to the extent of defying all odds against them including the family feuds. Juliet is willing to change her name for Romeo “O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name. Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, and I’ll no longer be Capulet” (Shakespeare 33-36). She is even ready to go to the extent of losing her virginity “Romeo [will] leap to [her] arms, untalked [sic] of and unseen”(Shakespeare 6-7). Romeo is a calm and self-contained lad he refuses to get into conflict with Tybalt “the reason that I have to love thee doth much excuse the appertaining rage to such a greeting” (Shakespeare 33-35). His calmness is also evident where he wants to go to the party but does not want conflicts to arise “I fear too early, for my mind misgives some consequence yet hanging in the stars hall bitterly begin his fearful date” (Shakespeare 107-109).
If I were in either Romeo’s or Juliet’s situation in the current time, I would never have made the mistake of killing Juliet’s cousin. His death worsened the couple’s situation. There was more drama in the relationship than before. Otherwise, their love would have thrived in secrecy, and it would have been much easier for them. However, Romeo did not fight Tybalt, and if I were him, I would also have done the same. It is because there should be no conflicts in the family. Tybalt had become family.
An excellent modern day scene is the love between two people of different races. In most cases, relatives of a prospect couple reject this matrimony because one race thinks they are better than their counterparts. For instance, John an African man loved Tracy a Briton however, Tracy’s parents adamantly discouraged her from seeing John just because he was of a different color. However, Tracy went against all the odds and decided to cut connection with her family to go and live with the love of her life. In the end, Tracy’s mother gives in to her daughter’s earlier request after pleading her to come back home saying, ‘if this is what will make you happy, then so be it.’
