Digital Media: Discussion of Ethical Obligations
The digital media houses various ethical issues. The complex nature of digital media suggests that the technological innovation poses problems on ethical grounds. For example, the word “pornography” is associated with digital media, cyberspace, and the Internet. It simply means a sexual act committed by people through various channels. However, people need to define pornography first before exploring the ethical issues. Usually, the word “pornography” sounds similar to prostitution, which implies a sexually explicit activity. On the one hand, pornography as the sexually explicit act differs from the various forms of prostitution. On the other hand, its meaning depends on the culture and norms of the country. Towards the end, the phrase “sexually explicit activities” refers to the shows and sexual deeds quite ill-mannered and vulgar to the public. In exploring the role of the digital media, the general digital media users should be knowledgeable enough to distinguish between moral and immoral acts in presenting and sharing photos and videos online.
Censoring the sexually explicit acts serves as the primary goal and role of the digital media. The presentation of genitals and other private parts of men and women on the medical books does not mean to be pornographic since the context and the visual was designed for educational purposes. The sexually explicit photos do not stir arousal since its main objective is for educational learning and training.

The medical books that contain these nude bodies will only reveal parts that require studies on anatomy and reproductive organs. However, they do not define pornography because they use some good materials for further studying. Regarding the digital media, its main role is to limit and define contents based on age and to censor other adult contents for public viewings.
Citing and posting pornographic photos is unethical. Uploading nude photos and sharing sex videos online remain unethical and barbaric since the responsible people who upload the adult materials arouse people to feel sexually active and motivated. If the Justice Department prosecutes these perpetrators, they do not care about freedom of expression. If the perpetrators claim their rights of freedom of expression, they fail to have one since they create chaos and havoc in the cyberspace. Of course, everyone has this right to post pictures and meaningful videos, not those sexually explicit contents that show one, two, and or three men or women who engaged in sex. Such sex videos will create chaos in cyberspace and in the society. Showing one’s ideas and interests to the public can be a good idea. At the end, when people expose their bodies and reveal the private parts for further arousal, they know they cross the line between freedom of expression and violation of rights.
Interestingly, people draw the line between freedom of expression and violation of rights in many cases. Aside from pornography, digital media also presents cyberbullying. Many cases emerge when people show express themselves through social media sites (Ess, 2014, p. 18). However, when they post them, many others react and post undesirable comments to the extent that they panic and want to commit suicide and any. On Yahoo, Facebook, and many other channels, people can read comments that almost destroy others’ reputation and self. Of course, it is good to express their ideas; however, they are wrong good when they sense that others can cross the line of embarrassing others or invade someone’s privacy. Regarding embarrassing, these people use offensive languages used to describe others. Therefore, this case makes people draw the line between freedom of expression and violation of rights.
These days, social networking sites facilitate the modern type of communication. Social media users can post sexual deeds and express vulgar words to the public. Regrettably, these websites, though prohibited, gain public access, especially for the teenagers and children. These situations may be prevented only if the website organization in digital media do not post scandals and hateful deeds relating to sexual desires that against the strict policies regarding the access to their websites. They should be strict when it comes to age restriction and the accession of the websites. However, in the cyber world, anyone can access anything (Ess, 2014, p. 19). Several techniques to access different websites are available, and many people do brutal things. In the United States, the First Amendment to the United States Constitution helps people survive from the harsh realities and protect the freedom of speech. This First Amendment to the United States Constitution remains constitutional and the right of speech applies to state and local governments. However, some categories of speech are not protected by this Amendment. Since the government officials will censor organizations and people if they commit some acts of lasciviousness or indecency, sexually offensive behavior that is against social norms and obscenity, the act of using vulgar words relating to sex (Ess, 2014, p. 13). In other words, the digital media sites should be responsible to limit and censor the obscene scenes since they cause moral problems among others.
In the end, the role of the digital media helps the general users to learn and understand between moral and immoral acts. When they post pictures and share videos in the digital media, they must realize they have the duties to take measures the impact of their actions. In sharing photos and videos online, they become liable for the consequences of their actions even if they have different perceptions when it comes to freedom of speech. The digital media sites help express themselves, and by all means, they learn to confront the harsh and vulgar way. As this greatly affects young generation’s people and their norms, they should think that their freedom of expression is not an absolute right. It is only a privilege.
