Introduction
People make decisions every day. Sometimes the choice to be made is between two things. One would like to have the two things for themselves. However, one has to decide really which one they should go for, and what exactly they should leave behind. In some cases, people become selfish and choose to have a share from each side. They aren’t willing to make a choice for one. These are the people who want to remain neutral in decision making. Sometimes people do this to try and fit in, other times they are not confident of the choices they make.
When dealing with such people, it becomes difficult to live with them. Understanding what they want is quite difficult. These people are not firm on their ground. They do most of their things trying to please certain persons and in most times, trying to look good. They don’t make their decisions on what they want, but on the image they want others to see. In most cases, these people only end up regretting in life. They discover too late that the only thing that matters is their happiness. They later learn that those they tried to look good for don’t care.
A good example of making a neutral decision is the life of a new college student. Back home, they are actively involved in their local church. Everybody there loves them for being the child all parents want to have. Parents encourage their children to be more like them since they appear to be the best children in the locale.

Once in college, they discover that those people who have strong faith don’t have as many friends. The student begins to think and assume that other students are having more fun than they are. They, therefore, change their behavior to fit in and also have fun like the rest.
The student joins the “cool kids’ gang”. Everybody in school now knows that the particular student is a cool guy. They enjoy the fame and popularity in school. They feel like the untouchables. For a moment, they feel like that is the life they should be living. At this time, the student drinks a lot, doesn’t attend classes, is involved in sex, and sometimes with multiple partners. The students live a life that is totally different from that they live at home. At home, they live the kinds of life that please their parents, while, in school they seek to please their fellow students.
At the end of their college years, the student sometimes fails to graduate. If they manage to graduate, they get very low grades that can’t help them get jobs anywhere. The sometimes also end up with STDs. The students, who were always living the kind of life, manage through college since they can manage to balance between their school work and their fun life. The student who joined the crew is left frustrated and embarrassed. The parents are also disappointed. In the long run, the parents learn the kind of life their child lived in the school. The students will also learn the double life their comrade led. These things would even make one commit suicide or end up living in shame.
Conclusion
When Dante Alighieri made the statement; on those who remain neutral in periods of moral crisis as having reserves in hell’s darkest places, is because the people are quite pretentious (Asmal, 112). They live a lie for their entire lives or the better parts of their lives. It is hard to learn these people’s ways and lifestyle.
