Frankenstein Analysis
De Lacey was an old man who owned the house where Frankenstein’s creature resided for months watching the family carry out its daily activities. The old man descended from an influential and well-respected family in France. His children, Agatha and Felix, were well bred and were among the distinguished within the region.
Their misfortunes began when Safie’s father (Muhammadan) was sentenced to death after he began obnoxious towards the government. He was a wealthy Turkish man that had inhabited Paris for many years. He had a daughter called Safie. On the day of his trial, Felix had been at the courthouse and was touched by the court’s decision. In his pursuit to help the man to escape the atrocious judgment of the court, Felix met the man’s daughter and instantly fell in love with her. He, however, continued with the plans of helping the merchant to escape prison despite Safie’s protests. Safie’s mother was an Arab Christian who was taken captive by Turks and got married to Muhammadan. She had implored Safie to follow the Christian values that would allow her to be free from the bondage of religious culture that forbade women to explore their intellectual capabilities.
Fortunately, Felix managed to help the man to break out of the prison and in return, the man gave him his daughter’s hand in marriage. However, Safie’s father was not fully committed to letting his son marry Felix, in fact, he loathed the idea.

So, he hatched a plan of betraying Felix to the government. Before he could implement his plans, the actions of Felix were discovered, and they were thrown into prison. His father and sister, Agatha were imprisoned. This news enraged Felix, and he went back to Paris to help his family. Unfortunately, his family was thrown to exile from their native country. They ended up in a miserable cottage in Germany.
He later discovered that Muhammadan was a traitor after he failed to honor the promise he had made of giving him his daughter’s hand in marriage and instead sent him some small amount of money for their maintenance. The De Lacey’s family were forced to live in poverty as the story explains (Shelley 144).
The story of De Lacey’s is a story of betrayal. Despite the much help that Muhammadan received from the De Lacey’s he still treated them with contempt and failed to keep his promise to Felix. This situation is exemplified by Frankenstein and the creature that he had made. At first, the Frankenstein had a strong urge of creating a human being that would satisfy his imagination. After several months of trial, he was finally able to create a creature that represented a man. Nonetheless, he was mortified by the being that he had created, and he deserted it to fend for itself while he indulged in other pleasures.
In the same way that Muhamad had achieved satisfaction when he broke out prison, Frankenstein had also felt the same joy after he was finally able to create a living being. It was Frankenstein mandate as the creator to take care of the creature and provide it with the basic needs. This was however not the case; the creature learned its lessons in the hardest way since its creator had betrayed it. Therefore, the theme that is being compared to the story of the De Lacy family and Frankenstein and its creature is betrayal (“Definition of BETRAY” p.n). The betrayed individuals suffered great consequences because of their loyalty and innocence while the betrayer reaped the fruits of benefits from the situations.
