News events are often reported differently based on both the source of the information and the bias the reporting agency might hold towards the events. Bias in reporting may tilt a story making the meaning of a certain event seem different when reported by different agencies. This paper captures the details with which three agencies (CNN, Aljazeera and the daily beast) reported the events surrounding the bombing down of the Russian war planes by Turkish air fighters.
Opinions the news agencies agreed upon by all the three media agencies are as follows;
Turkey is not in any way intimidated by Russia.
The event reignited the confrontation between the east and the western powers.
All articles indicate that Turkey was not ready to apologize for shooting down of the Russian plane.
Turkey seemed to have stabbed Russia in the back
Opinions the news agencies did not agree upon are as below;
CNN indicates that Turkish PM made signs of reconciliation after the event while Aljazeera claims that the event would not scare Turkey. A headline in Aljazeera indicates that ‘Turkey will not lose sleep over Russia’s harsh words’.
CNN and the daily beast contradict Aljazeera in predicting a cold war following the incident. The two claim that there was a possibility of retaliation from Russia following the incident while Aljazeera states that Turkey is Russia’s partner in the war against ISIS and that the event will not threaten peace between the two.

Wait! Geography paper is just an example!

According to Aljazeera, the shooting down of the Russian war plane was because it had violated Turkish airspace rules while CNN reports it as a possible propagation of war between the West and the East.

News reporting is an art. The way one chooses to convey information will often depend on both the facts surrounding the events and the interests at stake. The above headline is drawn from the reaction of Russia and Turkey following the shooting down of a Russian war plane that was set to destroy parts of ISIS strongholds in Syria. Three media agencies have been studied above; the CNN, which is an American news agency, Al Jazeera which is majorly based in the Middle East and the daily beast.
The media houses choose to highlight the story differently. As expected, the words used in reporting the events are contrasting. Despite the fact that the agencies are talking about the same events, some facts seem to have been highlighted differently leading to the presentation of different facts by the agencies. For instance, both CNN and the daily beast report of a possible confrontation after the attack while Aljazeera downplays these claims by stating that the longtime relationship between the two powers would be unshaken by the turn of events. The CNN has used words that tip the balance of the bias over the event. Reading through the article by CNN, one gets the opinion that if given a chance, Turkey would not repeat the attack on a Russian plane. This is totally in contradiction with the facts laid down by the rest of the two agencies; Aljazeera and the daily beast. The daily beast, on the other hand, seems to take a sort of neutral position in its reporting. However, there is an acknowledgment of the fact that the event could possibly lead to a conflict between the two.
The two news agencies (CNN and the daily beast) seem to be blaming Turkey over the action of bombing a Russian plane which they state would possibly lead to conflict. Aljazeera on the other rather takes the side of Turkey in stating that it is Russia that violated Turkish airspace policies to warrant the attack. Aljazeera seems to give lots of credit and pride to Turkey for shooting down the Russian plane. The headlines in Aljazeera read,’ Turkey won’t lose any sleep over Russia’s harsh words.’ This statement seems to show some bias of Aljazeera for Turkey. Contrary, CNN headlines seek to tell a totally different story. The same news has a headline in CNN indicating that ‘Turkish PM strikes a conciliatory tone after downing Russian jet’. This headline in CNN seems to indicate that Turkish officials had shown remorse following the event something contradictory to what Aljazeera reported. Further, the article in CNN goes ahead to report that Turkish officials had later organized a meeting with the Russians. This information is missing in articles by the other two news agencies.
CNN seems to express the opinion that Turkey would not risk a conflict with Russia and that Turkish officials had made a move to apologize for the actions of the Turkish military over the unfortunate events. The information shared in the three media sources, despite seeking to address the same event, end up highlighting it differently in a way that the reader may draw different or biased conclusions depending on which source they have accessed. The fact that the news agencies are based in different political regions may be the reason behind the variation in reporting the stories.
