Ernest Hemingway
Biographical information
Ernest Hemingway was an American novel writer, journalist, and a distinguished short story teller. He was born in July 1899 and died on July 1961. His father was a physician while his mom was a musician. His life and styles of writing had a strong influence in the 20th century. He won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1954 in the Literature category. He graduated from Oak Park High school in 1917 and briefly worked as a news reporter for Kansas City Star newspaper, the place where he learned most of his writing skills (Ruth 5).
Hemingway started his literary works at seventeen years and moved to Paris in the early 1920s.His most productive times were in the 1920s and 1930s. Later on in his life, he was injured in the World War I after volunteering in an ambulance unit of the Italian army. He was in a hospital for a considerable time as a result and was honored by the Italian government. While at the hospital, he met a nurse named Kurowsky and fell in love with her. The two planned to get married, but the nurse became engaged to another man which negatively affected Hemingway’s life. Subsequently, this experience became a basis for female characters in some of his short stories and novels. He used his experience in reporting during the Spanish Civil War as background for one of his novels. Moreover, on top of his writing prowess, he was also a great sportsman. Later on, as he neared old age, Ernest started living in paranoia believing that the FBI was monitoring him.

Consequently, in 1961 he committed suicide by shooting himself in the head using a short gun. His literary skills left a legacy in the world of literature.
Critical Analysis
Part one
Ernest is credited with changing the American writing style in a great way. His style of writing was shaped mostly by his experiences in the World War I. It is noted that he seemed to have lost any faith he had in western civilization mostly after the war. He expressed this by creating a writing style that involved dialogue, action, and silence. Ernest started by writing short stories before advancing into writing novels. As such, he had learned how to shape his language into telling the truth in a fictitious manner. He claimed that he used a style which made facts seem like flowing on water. He called this concept iceberg theory. He avoided syntax that was much complicated by using very simple sentences for his work (Seiden, Henry, & Mark 90). The style gave readers an easy time when reading and understanding his works. The sentences used to complement each other to portray the whole flow of events in a photographic manner. He always sought to portray emotions in a scientific way.
Part two
Ernest Hemingway used the themes of war, love, courage and to some extent incorporated wilderness and loss. It enabled him to get more popularity compared to his colleagues in the literature field. Notably, he also wrote about sports but focused more on the athlete himself rather than the sport (Panier, Robert, &Albert 200). However, criticism of his works has been made by various people in different ways. Some criticize his writing styles while others criticize his personality for different reasons.
He is criticized for having a weak personality. The devastating effects of his heartbreak are highlighted as a reason. The heartbreak made him very cautious on how he dealt with women underscoring his soft heart.
Ernest was known to write novels that followed a certain basic chronological order. Some critics deemed this as a boring way of writing stories. Whenever some stories from an author follow a straightforward and basic chronological order, such stories become easily predictable, and readers may at one point be bored by the story line (Tyler 134).
He was involved in the First World War. This made him get a passion for adventures mostly in the outside perspective. Most of his stories and novels were based on settings outside America, as opposed to other writers of his times in America. He had gotten used to the use of international flair and use of foreign locations in his books. American writers tried to capture the nature of the American society by framing their stories in an American setting so as to achieve their objective. Due to Hemingway’s different way of writing, he was criticized by fellow writers. They viewed him as a betraying the American way of writing.
Part three
Ernest Hemingway wrote the short story titled “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber” has an African setting whereby Macomber and his wife Margret are on a safari in Africa (Brandt and Alicia 3). They are guided by Robert Wilson, who is a professional hunter. During the hunt, Macomber is charged by a wounded lion, and he panics the result of which his wife mocks him for his act of cowardice. They go hunting for buffalos in the next day and shoot three buffalos whereby two die and one is seriously wounded. The wounded buffalo retreats into the bush an act which motivates Macomber and Wilson to proceed and track the animal. Macomber is charged by the buffalo but doesn’t panic this time; he kills the animal after several misses. Unfortunately, Margaret fires from the car, and accidentally she hits Macomber in the skull killing him instantly.
Part Four
“In Another Country” is a short story set in Italy during the First World War. Hemingway uses a character named “Nick Adams” to represent himself (Seiden, Henry, & Mark 90). He is an ambulance driver when he gets injured in the knee, whereby he visits the clinic daily for medical assistance. He heals quickly due to the use of machines by the doctors. Nick and his colleagues are hated by the people in the streets and restaurants since they are soldiers. Nick doesn’t brag about the medals they are awarded for their accidental injuries. The doctor teases Nick by telling him that he will get healed and plays football again though his knee cannot bend again. An Italian Major who was a great athlete was also wounded in the war befriends Nick and assists him to learn Italian.
Conclusion
Literature is used by authors to describe their opinion on different things in lives. Different writers have different ways of expressing their ideas depending on the subject they intend to write about. Ernest Hemingway was an author who broke all odds to find his way of expressing his views. He did not necessarily follow the styles used by his fellow writers. He changed the scope of American literature. He has been regarded as a genius on dialogue in his stories. He developed a way of dialogue with his audience and characters in the stories. Though he died in a rather sad way, his legacy lives and will always be used to challenge writers into developing a sense of originality in their literary works.
