Introduction

Although the term terrorism has its origins in the 18th century, reality indicates that over time the actions that characterize and define it as such have varied substantially, according to the historical moment in which they developed. This fact of particular historical relevance, revealed not only important strategic, operational and tactical vulnerabilities at the regional and world level, but also made necessary the adoption of measures to initially contain and subsequently attend to such scourge.

Developing

The attacks of September 11, 2011 in the United States of America, represented a milePolitical, social, economic and military worldwide, which forced to redesign state and military structures to face a different threat, which was not governed by the war, social and moral conceptions of the moment, particularly those of western origin.

Despite some efforts at the regional level (Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay), to adequately face the aspects related to security and defense, South America presents serious limitations to address it, which not only exposes strategic vulnerabilities, but also that itThey generate conditions for proliferation (directly or indirectly) of terrorism activities, so Uruguay inserts in the region, it is no stranger to said reality.

The above, it shows that terrorism as such and particular Islamic terrorism (currently), represent a threat, not only for people, but for states, which has forced the generation of new legislation, allocation of assignment ofmedia and adaptation of new tactics to face this threat.

Uruguay as part of its employment doctrine has determined as one of the threats to terrorism, which is why the prior knowledge of all those factors that may negatively influence or influence national security, are of particular importance for the country and must beobject of study and analysis.

Although the issue to be analyzed is sensitive due to narrow connotations and links with religious aspects, the proposed research can be carried out without inconveniences, being able to generate and/or increase knowledge in the matter, that the force can use for the generation of measures that measures thatallow to attend the threat in question.

Islamic extremism has generated through multiple terrorist actions, a large number of civilian casualties and security forces, in various places on the planet, which has caused a feeling of generalized insecurity. In Latin America Islam as a religion, has had (to a lesser extent) an increase in its followers and although a link between this fact and the action of extremism cannot be established, its analysis is important, as well as the determination of existence or not, of possible influences and/or links of extremism with the region.

In this sense and seen that South America, it cannot be oblivious to this phenomenon, carrying out a study in relation to the subject, represents a strategic need, which will allow adopting measures to anticipate, avoid and/or minimize the negative consequences of the actions of the actions of the actions of the actions of the actions of the actionsIslamic fundamentalism in the region.

Research objective

• General:

Carry out a study that allows to know the current situation of Islam as a religious current and the possible influence of Islamic extremism in South America, in order to adopt measures that allow to anticipate, avoid and/or minimize the negative consequences of jihaidist terrorism in the region.

• Specific:

Within the framework of the great general objective proposed, the following intermediate objectives have been established:

1. Quantify the population increase of Muslims in the region and the places of greatest concentration of them.
2. Determine what were the main terrorist activities in the region.

4. Determine what are the areas or countries that are possible or potential places of terrorist activities (attacks, finance, rest, shelters).
5. Establish what are the main threats with terrorist tendency in the region.
6. Determine whether there are links from the region (Islamic or not) with Islamic extremist groups.

Because the constant advance of terrorism worldwide is a fact, which has not only generated multiple deaths, but a state of permanent alert among nations, and that there is a reliable knowledge of action (to a greater or lesser extent) of Islamic terrorismIn Latin America, it is not necessary to establish a hypothesis in reference to the subject, to achieve the objectives set in this research work.
