Social Interactions
Autism damages an individual’s ability to interpret and understand own and others’ feelings, thoughts, and motives. As a result, a person with autism will have problems with the joint attention, which is crucial in the development of social skills and interaction with peers and with the environment. Hence, the person tends to be withdrawn from others limiting his/her social interactions (Heward et al. 223).
Communication and Language
Autism causes aloofness in a person and limited connection with others. Social interactions may be a key to the development of language and communication skills. Behavior Patterns
People with autism are associated with unusual behavior patterns, mainly routine inflexibility. They may demand sameness in their limited interaction with the environment. Response to Sensory Stimuli
Autism leads to the unusual perception of stimuli or the incapability to correctly create a coherent picture associated with specific stimuli. Mostly, it is associated with the development of hypersensitivity or hyposensitivity in an individual. That is, the person can hardly withstand particular stimuli that ordinary people do or can be utterly insensitive to stimuli to which other people respond (Heward et al. 225).
Intellectual Functioning
Autism retards the entire intellectual functioning capabilities of an individual. Deficits in the collective cognitive abilities of the individual affect his/her executive functioning. This impairs the individual’s working memory, effectiveness in behavior control, and flexibility in behavior. Hence, it may lead to intellectual disabilities to the individual affected (Heward et al. 225).
