European Universities and English Students
Introduction
The intake of international students in universities has increased dramatically over the last two decades. However, the students have taken part in different activities that includes traditional study abroad programs in which the student has much better chances of learning about different cultures along with having an understanding of higher education considering unfavorable circumstances in their home country. A developing trend of English students has been observed which reflects enhanced motivation of students to pursue their undergraduate studies from European countries. Nevertheless, the European countries offer students with diversified perspectives for students that include better fees structure together with the enhanced educational curriculum. Besides that, the research would also focus on the primary motivators and inhibitors that would affect students’ outlook for studying in European universities. The students are presented with English curriculum as well as foreign language as their language of instruction.
Background
With the passage of time, social and economic lives have become much more globally challenging and connected because of the enhanced degree to engage, connect and prosper on an international scale (Daly and Barker 26-41). Countries all around the world are forging agreements and connections for enhancing trade along with facilitating the mobility of goods, people, and services (Doyle et al.

22-24). As per Louise Tickle (1-2) more than 20,000 students have showed their interest in studying abroad in one or more than one European countries as per OECD.
A previous trend of UK school leavers or high school graduates has been surveyed. It has found that almost a quarter of students surveyed in March 2012 had planned to study abroad. Among 73% of them were strongly interested whereas only the 4% had ruled out the idea of studying abroad to different European countries. Among the core motivators in the study, a total of 33% of students have answered it as a desire for adventure, 26% of them have answered with better international career prospects, 8% were not entirely satisfied with the UK studies curriculum, 18% have found the European universities readily affordable, and 16% of them have considered the European universities reputation. Also, the studies have showed that around 28% of the students have showed their interest in moving towards the Europe whereas the rest have preferred studying in Canada or the United States. Besides all these core aspects, there are some inhibitors that make the students prefer other English-speaking countries like the United States and/or Canada. The study has showed that around 33% of them were worried about their finances, 14% thought that the European university educational credential would not be widely acceptable from overseas institutions, and more than 27% of them have showed inadequate language skills as the potential barrier for pursuing undergraduate studies in the Europe. Also, the study has concluded that there has been a 14% increase in the visitors as part of study abroad program with enhancement of more than 20,000 registrations (Prospects 1).
This ever-increasing trend has been observed because of a number of reasons about English students. The first and foremost advantage that the students face is the reduced undergraduate fees structure all around the Europe. However, in some countries, including Denmark and Germany, there are exceptionally no expenses as part of tuition fees for the international students. This is one of the core reasons for students preferring European countries as compared to their home country. Also, some of the universities in the Europe offer free accommodation and flights for their prospective students so that they can visit before applying at those universities. Another financial benefit is also offered in the form of free tuitions and a number of scholarships. These scholarships allow the need-based students to outperform in their respective fields of studies thereby boosting up university’s reputation.
Educational institutes in Central Europe are considered to be the developing hub for educational excellence. Most of the high-achieving students prefer in enrolling in different well renowned universities within Europe. Based on STEM subjects and its research outlooks, these countries offer exceptional opportunities for students to outsmart their peers within the home country. Similarly, the English students also find Europe universities having substantial better in a curriculum that acts as a motivator for studying abroad.
Explaining the issues faced by the English students at home, Christopher Middleton in Telegraph (1-2) has noted that the traveling and tuition expenses are quite affordable in Germany as compared to the United Kingdom. The aircraft fare is quite cheaper as compared to that of the United Kingdom’s rail fares. Also, the education costs less than £10,000 per annum that makes Germany a highly likable place in the whole Europe.
Nevertheless, there are a number of barriers as well. Each of the European countries has their native language that is quite different from English. Also, the opportunities for English-taught program are highly competitive because of the fact that English is preferred by other non-native nationalities as well. However, some universities have hybrid program having language of instruction in local language and English as well. Enrollment in those courses is relatively easier as compared to complete English curriculum courses. However, the local languages are told students to enable them with the better career and educational opportunities in the European countries. At this moment, more than 124 programs are offered in the English language in different universities of Germany that includes Berlin, Munich, or Hamburg state universities.
Education also includes the provision of better research and development outlooks for students to make their ideas presentable and in concrete form. Undergraduate studies in almost every part of Europe are highly effective, and it focuses on the development of better scientific outlook for the region. Most of the research is in the field of renewable energy sources and green energy. These two domains are quite common all over the Europe, and the countries have a clear focus on making the region energy and environmentally efficient. High school graduates having a great interest in this specific domain have some special interest in moving towards Germany and other European countries. Also, theses countries provide exceptional chances of undergraduate employment outlooks that are not readily available in the United Kingdom. Moreover, for exceptional students, the universities offer different rewards including complete fee waiver and scholarship to attract more students from the North American and the United Kingdom regions.
Students enrolled in arts and culture undergraduate program also have the opportunity to witness the cultural diversity and richness of the region. As all of the European countries are part of European Union, the students have the chance to explore the European culture and become witness the practical implementation of different historical architectures and masterpieces (Doyle et al. 471-490).
Research Methodology
The research for assessing the core factors behind the English students pursuing undergraduate degrees in Europe will be assessed on quantitative and quantitative grounds. For that, primary sources that include research journals and online newspaper articles will be referred for assessing different facts and figures presented in the paper. Apart from that, a total of fifty online and papered surveys would be conducted among the English community currently studying or having a plan to study in the European countries. The assessment questionnaire would present the students or potential students with different questions regarding their studies. It would also include potential motivators or inhibitors that would impact their decision of studying abroad in the Europe.
Research Aims and Goals
The research paper would address the core motivating factors that lead the students from the United Kingdom to pursue their educational career in the Europe. The research paper would address the following domains:
To evaluate the potential number of motivating and inhibiting factors for the English students studying in the Europe.
To assess the competence of students along with different fields of studies that has higher recipients of foreign college students.
Critical analysis of previous literature for assessing the shifting trends in educational grounds.
Conclusion
All in all, educational institutes in the Europe provide an exceptional opportunity to the English students in pursuing their undergraduate studies. It is dependent on a number of factors that includes, cultural, educational and financial outlooks. However, there are some barriers that are faced by the English students as well in pursuing their studies in the Europe. Some of them are the lack of financial outlooks, language barriers and most importantly, their perception of the European universities’ recognition on the global scale. All these factors along with their dynamic trend would provide a vivid picture of students’ perception of Europe’s undergraduate studies.
