Sadness, also regarded as emotional discomfort, plays an important role in the psychological system of our lives as human beings. Life brings diverse challenges in the sense that we as humans are not always going to feel good about ourselves, get along with everybody daily as well as having the feeling of motivation every other day. There will be periods when people will feel sad, and it is normal and okay to feel so. It is, therefore, necessary to understand the importance of sadness and the role it plays in the lives of human beings. Sadness as an emotional part of our lives often reminds individuals of who they are. The mood also tends to give life its meaning in the sense that when people can recognize and feel their emotions in healthy and safe environmental capacities, they end up being more grounded and resilient.
Research has proven that sadness has some benefits on human emotions. For instance, sadness helps in improving people’s memory .i.e. the ability to remember past things very fast and more accurately. It is argued that on unpleasant days which are likely to produce a bad mood, most people tend to remember and have a better recollection things of the past as compared to when people are in a happy mood. The negative mood which creates sadness helps in improving the attention as well as the memory of individuals for incidents within their environment. Sadness also helps the individuals to remember the original details accurately thus avoiding the occurrence of false information.

Another importance of sad mood in people’s lives is that it enhances the judgmental ability of individuals. It has been found that sad moods increase the ability of an individual to detect and correctly distinguish between aspects that are deceptive from ones that are truthful. People with happy moods are likely to commit social misjudgments brought about by bias. Sad moods also increase the ability of individuals to recognize between true claims and false claims. This is because people with sad moods are likely to be more attentive. Thus sad moods increase the capability and enhancing accuracy in the formation of judgmental impressions through critical thinking applied. The other vital significance role that sad sadness plays in our lives is that it increases our motivation as individuals. Often when people feel happy, they are likely to feel comfortable and would want to maintain such happy feelings and moments. When the situation changes and sad moods prevail, it motivates people in the sense that they need to change the current mood and the environmental challenges at large. This implies that sad people are likely to be motivated, go into action and have the effort to change the current situation. Sad moods in some cases also improve people’s interactions. Sad people are likely to engage in a more cautious and attentive communications compared to happy individuals. This is because sadness creates a more polite, elaborate and peaceful environment that often regarded to be conducive to good and proper conversations as well as facilitating people’s interactions. Sadness as a part of human life can also influence the aspect of fairness in the way we treat other people. Although sadness may be labelled as an emotional problem, it has some benefits and important role it plays in our lives as humans.
