Do these passages present a single and easily discernable Islamic attitude toward relations with Jews and Christians?
These passages present discernable Islamic attitude(s) toward relations with Jews and Christians. Right from Chapter 2, there is an indication that Jews and Christians look down upon the existence of Islam. Line 111 states, “And they say: None entereth Paradise unless he be a Jew or a Christian. These are their own desires. Say: Bring your proof (of what ye state) if ye are truthful” (2:111) It is assumed that Heaven and Paradise is only supposed to have people that are not affiliated to Islam. Again; in Chapter 3, the depiction that it is only the Jews and Christians that are referred to as “People of the Scripture.” Unfortunately, the Moslems end up feeling ‘discriminated’ as they are not categorized under the bracket of religious people. Expectedly, therefore, the Islamic attitude(s) is bound to remain negative as they are not classified as equal with the Jews and Christians.
Furthermore, the sarcasm in Chapter 2’s verse 135 delineates that only Christians and Jews are leading their lives in the correct path(s) (2:135). The Quran’s indirect mockery of Moslems assumes that Islamic affiliations are ‘wrong’ and should not be taken into serious consideration. When they are relating with Jews and Christians, it is inevitable to observe that the unpalatable Islamic attitude(s) often lead to ‘self-discrimination.
