Some Lessons from the Assembly Line” Article Written by Andrew BraaksmaAbstract
Andrew Braaksma is a young man who is narrating his experiences while working in assembly lines during summer vacations. While at the factories, Andrew witnesses the hardship that the workers go through working hard, little pay and long working hours. He now clearly understands the pains the workers feel due to lack of formal education. This experience makes Andrew vow to utilize his remaining college days by working hard so that he will be better prepared for the job market.
Introduction
Andrew Braaksma in his article focuses on the experiences he gained while working in assembly lines during his summer school vacations. He forthrightly appreciates the value of education while being cognizant of the kind of work he could do if he was not educated therefore promising himself that he will utilize his college knowledge well. This essay will critically analyze the essay from a perspective of three points which include low pay for hard work, a high possibility of his work being outsourced and long working shifts.
Working at the factories was not a mean fete for Andrew and his fellow workers because the nature of work was extremely demanding while the paycheck seemed somehow small. Andrew writes that it was difficult to transit from school life and full-time blue-collar work during the summer breaks. He writes “There my time is spent stamping, cutting, welding, moving or assembling parts…” (Gppoweroflanguage 1) At the end of his 12-hour shift, Andrew was admissibly shocked at how small his pay check was.

Hence, the writer is very aware the value of being educated and the need of utilizing his school knowledge to seek better jobs.
People who depend on blue jobs are always at a risk of becoming suddenly unemployed. The possibility of their jobs being outsourced is very high. Andrew writes that the most stressing bit about these jobs is knowing that their source of income could dry anytime. He attributes issues like downsizing and companies relocating to overseas to the risk of losing their jobs.
Last long working shifts in the assembly lines was a challenge to the workers which was compounded by the meager pay they received. 12-hour work shift in an assembly line is capable of draining an individual both mentally and physically. Andrew could not believe the little amounts he was taking home after spending time at the blistering production floor. He draws his key conclusion about factory life by observing how important it is to have some education.
Conclusion
Andrew in this article observes the kind of work people who have no education are subjected to in the assembly line. He notes that the work is tiresome, little pay and the shifts are long. Hence, he concludes that he is lucky to get an education and that he should make the best of his college life.
