Life In a Diverse Community

Diversity could be in the form of age, gender, religion, perceptions, race-ethnicity and beliefs. Living in diverse community requires cultural tolerance and understanding that people are different. The research employs elements of a diverse community that proponents may use to argue that diversity causes identity and cultural erosion. A diverse community values differences in people. This study proves that living in a diverse community does not require an individual to give up their identity or cultural practices. These studies also maintain that though people may want to alter their identity, it is primarily the matter of choice and not a coercive tool from a diverse society. The paper examines the main factors, which could lead to a person to renounce their tradition and identity for another culture. The researcher uses community and history illustration in asserting arguments. This research further proves that the key factors leading to conformity and traditional abandonment are divergent with the elements of a diverse society.
Understanding Diversity in Society context
Migration and settlements contribute to cultural diversity more so in developed countries. Diversity encompasses age, gender, religion, perceptions, race-ethnicity and beliefs. Living in diverse community requires cultural tolerance and understanding that people are different. A diverse community values differences in people. This kind of society recognizes that people are unique regarding ideas and perception even the skin color could be one.

There is an unconfirmed notion, which may suggest that diverse community forces people to give up their culture and identity. A diverse society is less likely to force an individual to conform to conform to other culture. Understanding and the tolerating cultural difference do not necessarily mean that people have to abandon their identity and traditions. This study proves that living in a diverse community does not require an individual to give up their identity or cultural practices. Advocacy for Freedom
A diverse society promotes an individual freedom. For a country with various groups of people, people have freedom of opinions and cultural ideas. Consider two countries America (which has diverse cultures and races) and Somalia (which is almost single religion state and unitary race). It would be difficult to force Americans to conform to either religious patterns or one cultural practice (Kelley 24). However, in a community with little diversity, the government would find it easy to force people to live in the pattern (Murithi, 136-157). For instance, it would be simpler to use religious law to decide on national matters in Somalia than in America.
Similar social styles does not automate traditional beliefs
It is possible to argue that lifestyle like the one presented in Somalia preserve culture and identity. However, this kind of argument is faulty because a single migrant in Somalia would have no choice but to follow but conform to the religious laws to feel accepted. On the contrary, a diverse society gives migrants an opportunity to uphold their cultural values and beliefs. The key word in this statement is the ability to make an individual choice versus the possibility to be manipulated by groups into conformity. Even within a family people still, think differently let separate groups of families. Sometimes, ancestral norms and religious norms may conflict (Schneiderman and Barrera 354-357). In such a scenario it would be inaccurate to conclude that we promote “common belief,” when there is the likelihood that within the same state views would vary over tradition and religion. Nevertheless, a diverse society is free from social and cultural duress. Therefore, diverse society allows individuals to exercise their traditions without intimidation, which is mostly standard in the unitary community.
Manipulations of characters to conformity
Diverse society reduces chances of bullying. People are bullied when circumstances limits they rights to express different viewpoints. In a society where they are different gender groups and different age groups, it would be tragic to try to force people to behave or take an identity of one gender or age group. Even if there would be irrational individuals to force such a circumstance, there are biological features of personality that cannot be compromised. For example, no society norm would suppress a person to transform their gender or age group. The idea is not practical. With this point in mind, this study challenges the notions, which suggest that diversity may force an individual to give up their identity. Well, age and gender are identity features that cannot be altered.
Tolerance and Understanding
Diversity may encourage curiosity, which leads to cultural appreciation and tolerance. Considering the life of Malcolm X, who had the ability to travel across continents and observed diverse culture, it is justified to posit that diversity promotes cultural tolerance and appreciation of different cultures. In the early life of Malcolm X before exposure to different cultures, he promoted racial hatred and animosity. His first life movement was fostered by ignorance of living with one community lifestyle and belief patterns. However, later in after visiting Africa, Middle East, and France Malcolm noted that his political ideas were misled and malicious. He then considered preaching an international tolerance across the globe (Cha-Jua 14-25). Malcolm’s life is relevant for this study because his he lived in different society life -One that was of conservatism and another diverse life with different races. Malcolm’s identity as an African American never changed after the various lifestyles. He only learned the importance of being different in one world.
Having a society with diverse families is good. Such kinds of life promote tolerance and respect. Differentiating the difference between tolerance and conforming is important in this study. Tolerance entails allowing a different person to exercise his belief without discrimination and the same time appreciates the differences that exist in inhabitants in the society. Conformation and compromising are associated with aligning a behavior with related persons. However, it is impossible to align one’s behavior in a diverse society where people are different and enjoy being different. This study concludes that Living in a diverse community does not require people to give up their family identity and traditions.
