Tolstoy was born at Yasnaya Polyana, south of Moscow in 1868. As a kid, his parents died and was raised up by relatives. He dropped out of the university; one tutor referred to him as being both unable and unwilling to study. It was a problematic wedding with huge quarrels about sex and unpleasantness on both sides. Leo nurtured a very long beard, became a fitness addict and spent most of his time in his study writing several hugely successful books, among them War and Peace, Anna Karenina, The Death of Ivan Ilych (“LITERATURE: Leo Tolstoy”).
Tolstoy didn’t view art for the sake of art but sincerely believed that good art should make individuals less more realistic and judgemental, and just like religion, should promote kindness and morality. Tolstoy’s crusading moralistic trait has often been disregarded by contemporary critics who find it unimportant.
