Literary work

A literary work is the expression of a creative mind. The writer uses his imagination to present his/her ideas in the most beautiful words. But the fact remains that readers do not always perceive the work in the eyes of the writer. He reads and explains every event according to his thought processes and this gives us various interpretations of the same work. Moreover, a novel, when it is visualized in terms of a movie, things take a further turn and become one of the most popular movies of the time.
Let us consider the novel “The Turn of the Screw” that has been read as well as portrayed as a movie. Henry James has presented a story that seems to be quite real along with the influence of the ghost. Although most ghost stories are not considered to be real, this one has a different appeal as it has been put down in words and makes it more credible. The governess, who tells the tales of ghosts, is actually trying to defend herself as she undergoes a battle of self-identification crisis and tries to blame the ghosts (Holland 784).
The same story has a unique appeal to the audience as a movie. The story is portrayed through flashbacks and the governess Ann who is to take care of her pupils begin to imagine things after hearing the past stories of the family. Since no one else can see the ghosts that she talks about, she feels that the students most probably were involved in the death of Quint and Jessel. The story takes a twist and in the end the police find Ann holding on to the dead body of Miles.

We can take another example here to explain writer’s choice of explaining a story either as a science fiction to be read or as a film like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Shelley has portrayed Frankenstein based on the science that was prevalent on her time. Apart from the scientific approach it gives a humanistic critique of that scientific breakthrough. Furthermore, in Shelley’s book, Dr. Frankenstein brings life to a dead body that is made up of animal bones through electricity. It is highly intelligent and self-aware. This idea has relation to present day science where electrodes are helping paralyzed patients to gain back movements. Shelley puts forward the message to the entire world that science should be used in moderation and not for destruction (Heffernan 158).
The film has gained great popularity worldwide. The way Frankenstein is portrayed as an obsessed scientist draws the attention of all. He and his assistant Henry are thrilled at their creation and so are the viewers. But when the huge monster kills Maria, everyone wants to punish him. The monster even tries to kill its creator. The horror portrayed in the film is one of the best ever known in horror classics. The tone, the action and rendition of the story are unique and terrifying as well. The filmmaker holds the attention of the audience till the last moment and this is what brings about the difference between reading a book and watching the same is a vivid way with background music that adds to beauty of the film.
Every man uses his brains to explain all situations whether it is a book or a film. The writer is in most cases responsible for the various explanations that are available in the different books that help readers to further clarify and understand the meanings of the books or the films in question.
