Description and analysis of the key scene
In the movie, the phrase ‘show me the money’ was used when Rod Tidwell who featured Cuba Gooding Jr, talked to Jerry on the phone and told him to repeat the phrase. The ‘show me the money’ phrase, was used by the directors for the literal meaning of getting more profits, but did not represent the message nor the theme of the film.
The context of the phrase is that Jerry was left by all his clients except Rod Tidwell, who was a talented receiver for the Arizona Cardinals. When Jerry called Rod to confirm if he was still to be his agent, Tidwell forces him to shout the words “Show…Me…the…money.” Jerry shouts it out with all of his might and Rod then confirms that he is still his agent. Although Jerry advocated for putting people first instead of the money, the phrase was used by Jerry, ironically, to confirm that he will put money first and nothing else. Jerry did so because he was desperately holding on to his only remaining client and could not risk losing him. However, that did not become the case as Rod and Jerry got along well and they became very close as they both helped each other. Jerry became a better person, and Rod became a better player. After that, Jerry gets Rod an excellent contract, therefore ‘showing him the money.’ This shows how putting people first, will naturally bring good results and better benefits.
Although it seems that the phrase ‘show me the money’ exemplifies the theme of money in the movie, it was not necessarily the teaching or the message the creators of the film were trying to put across. The message that the directors were trying to put across is that, individuals should put people first, instead of money, in their businesses.
