Mulan Movie Review
Positive Review
The film Mulan was positively received due to its feministic appeal. So far, it stands out as one of the best Disney produced films that project a strong female main character. Mulan is projected as an opinionated female character who seeks to search deeper into her inner being (Brown, 1). She is different from other Disney female characters such as Snow White, Sleeping Beauty or Cinderella who are synonymous with having a prince charming, living in luxury and living in royalty. Instead, Mulan is projected as a female character that has the potential to be creative and also be an effective leader in implementing her own laid down policies.
Just like Disney the male characters, Mulan is able sacrifices herself for the love of her community just like Hercules was portrayed over the years (Brown, 1). The uniqueness of Mulan is also showcased when she not concerned with the aspect of finding true love like other female characters in Disney-produced film. Even though she is attracted to Shang but she avoids meeting the matchmakers who had predicted that their relationship in future. She took over the leadership of the army from her father. In military leadership, she does not wish to be a man for her to make a significant impact in battle but she believes in her inner strengths, and this is what other Disney female characters lack (Brown, 1). Even though she impersonates a man in order to join the war but her courage effectively enhances the theme of feminism in this film.

Besides, the movie contains simple villains who are destructive in nature in regards to killing innocent villagers and destroying their properties (Brown, 1). This is common to many villains presented by Disney over the years. The movie also showcases the perspective of women according to ancient Chinese customs. For instance, the emperor`s consultant wanted Mulan to be executed simply because she was dressed like a man (Brown, 1). Therefore, the movie was a masterpiece in highlighting various ways of breaking diversity issues like race and gender in our society.
Negative Review
The movie is darker than any animated Disney movie. For instance, Mulan film begins with the slaughter of an unknown man and then the attack of a society in China accompanies that episode (Minna`s Disney Blog, 1). In short, the entire film is based on war and many parents are concerned if this film is suitable for their kids. Even the main character Mulan does not shy away from murder and violence. The background of the film is saturated with a blood red sky. The movie shows the destruction of villages, and this is quite dark for Disney. Even though they do not show the live killing of people but Mulan picks a doll from ground to symbolize death.
Contrarily, the emperor’s consultant known as Chi Fu is projected as an annoying racist individual who is used to bring the comedic impact of the movie. More ever, the villains are extremely dehumanized. For instance, Shan Yu is projected to have yellow eyes, gray face, pointed teeth and pointed fingernails that seem like claws (Minna`s Disney Blog, 1). Additionally, he is animal-like who has a super-human strength that enables him to hang from roofs, trees to buildings. The movie has also annoyed people with constantly enforcing the female and male stereotypes. The themes songs utilized in film are praising women and empowerment agenda (Minna`s Disney Blog, 1).
Simultaneously, Mulan is different from other women. For example, she is not perfect in domestic work and marriage. Her character does not fit in a home setting, and that is why she met the matchmaker for life assessment (Minna`s Disney Blog, 1). Even though the film has succeeded in projected Mulan has a strong female character, but it also fails through showing women as being worthless in the community. For instance, Mulan had to impersonate a man for her to be associated with greatness.
