Father Daniel’s goal is also to construct a centre for visitors, a convent for the Carmelite nuns, a Gothic church, and purchase the Irma Lake Ranch that is worth $8.9 million (Flott, September 8, 2010). The mission of Mystic Monk Coffee Company is basically to enlarge the company’s operations by purchasing a new brewery that will help in producing more coffee and the returns generate more funds. The vision is for the company to construct a new monastery. The mission of these monks is to live a prayerful life in solitude as they work to create more profits to help make Father Daniel’s vision a reality.
Core and Non-core factors in the Company
Mystic Monk Coffee produces its products from high-quality organic Arabica and fair trade Arabica beans. The flavours they produce include Mystical Chants of Carmel, Mystic Monk Blend, Cowboy Blend, and Royal Rum Pecan (Aquinas & More Catholic Goods. (2018).The main target market of this company is the Catholic population in the United States that takes coffee and supports missions of the monastery. The company’s core business is to increase coffee production. Initially, their mode of coffee distribution was through word of mouth until they set up a website through which they have been making most of their sales. This has enabled the company to reach out to more customers at the same time. Father Daniel’s vision of constructing a new Mount Carmel would be achieved by generating more profit from the sales of the Mystic Monk Coffee (Koenig-Bricker, March 23, 2011). To achieve this, he bought a bigger roaster that would facilitate production of more coffee in an hour. Quality and variety have given the company greater competition over other brands.
The core strategy that the company uses has been working for them since they target the Catholics in the United States. The company is also aiming at setting up wholesale sales to the churches and in coffee shops. However, one of the main constraints the company has been experiencing is that the roaster they have is not efficient as it only produces 130 pounds of coffee in an hour, and with a new roaster they would be able to produce 540 pounds in a day. This is one of the factors that are limiting them from achieving their primary goal, as well as limited working hours, workforce, and better marketing strategies. The company’s winning strategy is having loyal customers but misses on most opportunities due to the amount of coffee they produce. For the company to be able to reach its goals, they need to take time and develop a new strategy. The idea of buying a bigger roaster is only likely to be of help if the workforce and the working hours are increased. The Company needs to get a strategy that will work for them since at some point the demand for their products will exceed the amount they are producing. Production is in most cases limited because the monks meditate and pray throughout the day.
The company has the opportunity of making more profits. A large population of the American citizens drinks coffee which means that the business has the potential to generate profit. These people are of great significance since they are the main consumers and without them, perhaps the company would be struggling. Currently, the company has a net profit of about 11% which can go higher due to the high quality. The monks believe that they can be able to acquire the Irma Lake Ranch through profits generated from the Mystical Monk Coffee Company as well as donations. Most of the sales are made through the website where they ship the products for free, and through orders that are directly made to the monk’s secretary. Their marketing strategy of targeting the Catholics in the United States is a great way for them to make profits for now. However, they need to expand their operation for them to achieve their goal. The monks work for barely 6 hours in a day; therefore, they should also consider outsourcing labour. Purchasing a new roaster as stated earlier would increase production by up to 780 pounds in a day for the six hours that the monks work. This production level can allow the company to increase their sales six times more. Their current annual profits are $75,000 if this is multiplied by 6, the annual sales would also increase assuming the demand also increases to match the effort. The net profit margin, on the other hand, would increase from 11% to about 15 to 19%. Tough they have not been able to buy the Irma Lake Ranch; they have bought a ranch located at the end of a certain private road in Wyoming (New Mount Carmel Foundation, Inc., 2013). The monks have been helping with the construction, and they look forward to finishing it in less than three years (Zuhlsdorf, 2015, August 11).
Special values associated with the Company
Being established and ran by a group of monks means that the company produces products that are appealing to the Catholics across the United States. Currently, the company is meeting the market demand for ethical coffee production. The monks have created good relationships with their suppliers which mean they have a constant flow of raw coffee. What is special about this company is that the goals and objectives they have are not for just their gain, but also for creating a new monastery where they can accommodate more monks. This is a great way of giving back to the community. The company has received numerous positive reviews which show that their products are of high quality. The fact that they spend much of their time praying and meditating indicates that they are committed to their purpose in the monastery.
