The Differences between the Flood Scene in the Noah Movie by Aronofsky and the Bible
The movie Noah released in 2014 and directed by Darren Aronofsky is based on the biblical story found in Genesis 6 – 9. There is an additional and replacement of some information in the movie compared with the story’s narration in the bible. The primary purpose of writing this paper is to discuss the accuracy of Noah’s film directed by Darren Aronofsky based on the biblical text as it appears in the bible with a primary focus on the flood scene.
In the film, Noah discovers concerning the flood through the two different prophetic dreams, where in both of them he finds himself submerged in water. In the first dream, he sees dead people while in the second one he sees animals in the water swimming towards a ship. However, in the Bible, God directly tells Noah that He is going to destroy the earth because it is filled with violence (Gen. 6:13). Therefore, God requests Noah to build an ark and gives him specific dimensions and directions on how to construct it. Also in the movie, Methuselah who is Noah’s grandfather gives Noah a seed that he claims is from Eden that Noah plants after returning to his family and grows to become a forest overnight. The forest supplies all the construction materials they required for the ark. However, the bible does not give a reference to where Noah gets the material to build the ark.
In the movie, Noah, his family members, and the watchers assist in the construction of the Ark.

Wait! Noah paper is just an example!

However, the bible does not give the specific people who did the building except that Noah did as God had commanded him (Gen. 6:22). Also in the movie, Noah went to Cain’s descendant and tries to find wives for Ham and Japheth but does not see appropriate partners. Therefore, in the film Noah’s two children Ham and Japheth did not enter the ark with wives, only Shem did. According to Gen. 7:7, it is clear that all the three sons of Noah went into the ark with their wives.
In the film, people attempted to enter the ark and in the process made holes in the ark. However, only Tubal-Cain was able to go in the ark and hid in the snake’s room. Ham Noah’s child took care of him, dressed his wounds, and ensured that he was safe. Tubal-Cain and Ham also plot to kill Noah. At some point, Tubal-Cain takes a snake and bites its head for food, and gives Ham a piece. In the bible, nobody attempted to enter the ark from the outside. Therefore, no holes were created on the ark, and nobody went in the ark including Tubal-Cain except Noah, his household, and the animals. Therefore, no one ate or killed any animal. Also, the Bible does not explain what happens in the ark before they landed on the mountain, except it only gives the chronology based on days and months.
In the film for them to know when to descend from the ark, Japheth sends a raven who returns with nothing and then a dove that comes back with a leaf. However, in the Bible, a dove is sent three times. The first time the dove returns, the second time it comes back carrying a leaf and the third time it does not return.
From the above, it is evident that the movie is based on the biblical event of Noah. However, there is an addition and changing of some incidents in the film such as the people who build the ark, tried to enter, Japheth who helped Tubal-Cain and plotted with him to kill his father, Noah and who sent a bird to confirm if they could descend from the ark.
