Personal Objective Speech on Calabash
Introduction
Have you ever suffered from food poisoning? (attention catcher) Or have you ever gone for several days without eating fresh food because you don’t have a proper storage facility? (listener relevance link) Well, I have, and that’s why today as my classmates I am going to take you through both the lousy experience one goes through without a better storage facility and the fantastic feeling one has when assured of the safety of their food when stored in the Maasai Calabash (speaker credibility statement). In this speech, I will talk about the calabash in details, its importance to you and me as my classmates (thesis statement). I will also highlight its cultural significance to the Maasai community in Kenya.
Body
First main point
Calabash is a vital storage facility among the Maasai community in Kenya. (A.1 sub, sub-point). In the past, it was used to store even cereals away from pests that might cause destruction. (A.2 sub, sub-point). It was also used to store fresh blood that is obtained from cows, but most importantly, it can be used to store milk. As a young girl back at home on my fifth birthday, I received a Brown calabash for my birthday gift from my grandmother (B.1. sub-point). Since we were always on course moving with our cattle in search of greener pasture the guard was meant to carry milk around and help me not to feel hungry as we walk around. Traditionally Maasai diet is composed of food such as milk, blood, fat, honey, meat and three backs (Albala 98).

The calabash is obtained from a guard was cleaned dried and made hollow inside (A.sub, sub-point). This particular calabash is mainly used by the Maasai community to carry around a mixture comprising of milk and blood which they consume (B. sub, sub-point). The Masai community highly values these guard that they sew them to make them durable and also to look beautiful.
Second main point
Through the Calabash as a Maasai young lady, I was able to store milk for several days without getting spoilt, in fact, with days the quality of milk inside the calabash improved. On the other hand, I used the same calabash to store safe and pure drinking water (A. sub, subpoint). As a cultural heritage, I also have through the calabash understand our culture and also appreciate the diversity of religion among other communities and their importance in defining the communities (1. Sub, sub-point). Being a lady, I was also expected to learn the art of decoration on the walls of the calabash, I discovered and mastered the craft through my gift calabash, and as a Maasai lady, I now know how to decorate and even make calabash for my own properly (2. Sub, sub-point).
(B. sub-point) On a similar note as a classmate, you can also learn to appreciate the cultural diversity of different cultures amongst ourselves through the Maasai culture (Langley 62). You also get to know how milk is considered an essential meal among the Maasai its ceremonial uses and its medicinal uses (1.sub, sub-point). As a class, you also get to learn about the beauties associated with the beautiful Maasai calabash (2.sub, sub-point).
Third point
Blood and milk given to the sick among the Maasai community are carried using Calabash, it was also used to take milk that was used in ritual ceremonies. The guard is also used to distribute milk across the community (A.sub, subpoint). As a child in Maasai land, the first impression of the calabash is the mother’s milk delivered in a well-decorated container (1.sub, sub-point). The decorations on the calabash show the relationship of women, their children, and milk which are not only biological but emphasized by the honor of the milk calabash (2.sub, sub-point). (B. sub, point) Women in the Maasai Community define their social positions through the calabash decorations with several symbols; (B.1.sub, sub-point) it is here that the women demonstrate their power and capabilities over the older males.
Conclusion
In conclusion, calabash is of importance to the Maasai community as it symbolizes diversity at the same time it is a storage facility (Review). Calabash, on the other hand, is a piece of a fantastic piece of art (Clincher statement). Thank you!
