Admission Essay
One of the most fascinating questions that people often ask themselves is what to do with their lives? It is as exciting as it is difficult. Very few people get the question right and even fewer manage to execute the answer with precision. I think I am one of the few who has managed to do both. My interest in business began a long time ago when I would often watch my mother manage her business in Columbia and pick up a few skills that have never departed me until this day. I have had my fair share of great ideas. I started small, of course, but small became big and big became bigger. Before I knew it, I was conceiving ideas that everyone around was impressed with, myself included. Currently, however, I am obsessed with the biggest idea yet. The so-called biggest thought is the pursuit of a Master’s Degree in Sustainable Development in Brattleboro. I consider it as such because if achieved, it has the power to change a lot.
Obtaining a Masters Degree in Brattleboro has the power to change both my short-term and long-term goals. If these goals are achieved, then there has to a corresponding change in the social and economic impact I have. It is no longer about volunteering as a Math teacher in my home-town or anywhere else- as I did for quite some time. Neither is it about developing an app where people can share insights on various topics. Studying in an institution with a top-notch entrepreneurship curriculum, taught by world-class faculty and with a highly regarded network of peers to create lasting change, I, in turn, will develop and sharpen my skills.

I have been in business for quite a long time. However, one of the most significant benefits I would gain in the short term is an improvement to my skills of doing business. Such would be aided by gaining a more in-depth and functional business knowledge. The degree would undoubtedly help me improve my skills to motivate teams and develop an entrepreneurial mindset that can accommodate ambiguity and overcome obstacles in any industry. These are all short-term goals that I hope to attain as I pursue the degree.
There are also several long-term goals which I am confident to achieve. I have primarily been focusing on start-ups and never gave the idea of developing such start-ups into profitable, money-making ventures. I suppose that is down to a lack of adequate skills in managing the larger, more complex business. This is one area I hope to improve on and help to turn the numerous start-ups into larger ventures. Growing bigger businesses would also assist in the creation of more jobs. However, I also hope to learn about job-creation in a different light and how to encourage more people to be employers rather than job-seekers. Lastly, I hope that I will help make the world a more positive place by enhancing the social values of people around the world. Whether this will help people do business better is something I will have to wait to find out. However, pursuing this degree is undoubtedly one of the most daunting and exciting challenges I have faced. I am sure it is a challenge that will be deeply rewarding to me and those who are around me.
