Principals of Criminal Law: Hattori
In the case, Yoshi Hattori and his cousin Webb were driving to a classmate’s house when they mistook the house number and ended on Rodney Peairs’ property. Peairs acted in what he said was self-defense against the unidentified intruders and shot Hattori to death.
Judicial Process
The sheriff who arrived at the scene did not arrest the offender even after a few days later. The officer gave the reason that he did not take Peairs as a criminal and that he was defending his family from a lethal intruder. However, the jury and the prosecution rejected the offender’s claims that he acted legally citing that he had many alternatives of dealing with the intruder other than using his firearm. However, the district attorney said that a person could kill anyone who comes by their house chameleon; thus Peairs acted in self-defense hence not guilty (Boyes-Watson 130).
Victims Perspective
The Hattori’s family felt uncontended with the proceedings of the case and had many questions. The grief over their gone was unjustifiable regarding what the lawyer representing Peairs made it look like (Boyes-Watson 131).
Civil trial
The Hattori did not contend with the above decision which made them file a civil suit to show that what Peairs did was wrong. The verdict of the appeal came from a Baton Rouge court which found Peairs guilty and that he should compensate Hattori’s parents. The court rejected Peairs’ argument that his actions were for self-defense (Boyes-Watson 132).
