Reflective Movie Review
Movie analysis is an important component that provides a careful evaluation of the play. In this review, the focus is on a movie called “Father of the Bride.” ‘Father of the Bride’ is a film about Nina Banks and George who are both parents of a young girl called Annie. Annie is contemplating to marry, a fact that is making his father nervous because the young girl in the family is getting married. The review concentrates on the explanation of systems theory in describing the role of the family as part of the emotional unit in making complex decisions.
Systems Theory
System theory of the family tries to describe the behavior of individuals in observing the family unit from an emotional perspective. The theory is used to describe the complex interactions which exist in the family unit. Some of the challenges experienced at the family level include disconnection, actions, feelings, and thoughts of members (Theory, 2016). The movie offers a classic illustration of key issues impacting the family unit considerably.
The first challenge is presented by George Banks having trouble in accepting the fact that her daughter, Annie, is getting married. Annie announces her expectations of becoming a mother, only for George to be traumatized by such revelations. The issue to George is that Annie would be distanced from him. The abrupt wedding plans bumble his father, an issue further worsened by the concerns of a man entering the family line and taking an innocent daughter away through marriage.

The impact to the family is felt on the occurrence of emotional noncooperation between family members. When one family member goes away may be through marriage or death, there is a gap which is created. Such a case leads to the rise of stress rather than a sense of comfort. A key area of strength in this segment is the idea that the father is taking a control figure in running the affairs of the family.
The second challenge is the issue of George coping with the knowledge that he is approaching his fiftieth birthday. The most intriguing thing is learning that his wife Nina is expecting a baby. The impact is a failure to accommodate realistic expectations of becoming an old father, now that his wife is pregnant (15:38/1:17:25). Because of this, there is the tendency to over-think about such a scenario leading to anxiousness. The problems arise when there is a failure to accommodate things at their present status.
The third challenge is presented by the patriarchal nature of George, a family figure. However, George is seen to have developed a soft spot as far as his daughter is concerned. George presents some firm instances relating to the role played by the male figure in the family. The fourth issue is the involvement of a male character in the play. It seems as a blustering move, the inclusion of a non-committal figure in planning the affairs of the wedding. Such traits affirm to the belief of the stereotyped nature of the male behavior in the society. Fathers must be involved fully in making appropriate arrangements for ‘their daughter’s wedding’ and should not be left behind. The stereotypical element of men abandoning their roles should be replaced by demonstrating gender roles of both mother and father (McGowan, 2012). A key area of strength is the father figure played by George and the fact that he is less concerned about feminine issues like in the case of reluctance in preparations for the wedding.
‘Father of the Bride’ presents a perfect example for the explanation of systems theory in understanding the emotional value attributable to the family. It illustrates the presence of family troubles in accepting new changes, coping with the problem of old age, the father figure, and the development of a soft spot for women in trying to accommodate them in the family line. There has been a stereotype belief that men should abandon some roles in the family simply because they feel it is the responsibility of women to act in certain ways, like with the case of preparations for the wedding. As such, general patterns in the family line must be observed in running complex areas in decision making.
