Winning is not the only thing
Vince Lombardi, a well-known football player, and coach, once said, “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing” (Overman 77). However, I disagree with his statement. Winning is not the only thing that matters in life. Losing helps, you build your character. For instance, in a football game, players learn from their losses, and it gives them another chance to develop or grow. Even the best football clubs often get defeated before they eventually succeed to get the cup. Losing also fosters humility. One develops pride when he continually wins, but upon losing, he or she becomes humble.
When one continually wins, it becomes easier to stop learning. It gives one a false sense of their abilities, and you stop working hard. On the other hand, losing gives one a purpose and drive. Losing a match makes players work harder to achieve what they have failed. Winning is only valuable when it is accomplished in the right way. When we say winning is the only thing, we mean that it is a life or death situation. Football players who believe that winning is a life or death situation fail to enjoy the game because they are way too focused on winning. Once they win, they are susceptible to switching to autopilot, and that is when they begin to develop bad habits. They resort to cheating by use of enhancing drugs or cause injury to opponents to win a match. Cheating makes winning less valuable.
Therefore, winning is not everything, and it is not the only thing as well.

People engage in football or athletes because of the love and passion they have for the game. Losing gives us a chance to develop and build our character. In as much as winning is excellent and enjoyable, we should also accept that there must be a loss. Michael Jordan lost a couple of times; surely he wouldn’t be declared a loser.
