Sociology can be described as the structure, development, and the way in which a society functions. Sociology also tackles the various problems that are often experienced in society. It aims at dealing with all those problems that are in society and that can contribute a lot in making the society a better place. Growing Up in Chicana/o is all about some of the experiences that the Mexican Americans had to go through while in America. Tiffany Anna Lopez made a collection of various stories regarding how life was about when growing up in Chicana/o. The children had a hard time growing up since they faced a lot of problems while growing up (Lopez & Lopez, 2014). Growing Up in Chicana/o was very difficult especially since Mexican Americans were not treated as the other people and there were very many stereotypes regarding them as well.
The United States is a place where the people have no fixed cultures and all the people live their lives as they would want to without having to worry about what other people will think about them. However, the Mexicans could closely follow their cultures even when they were in the United States. That caused them great problems since they could be ridiculed by the Americans for living such lives. It was very wrong especially for the children since they started seeing as if their cultures were not good. It also encouraged them from abandoning the cultures that they had. It was not right since they should be allowed to live their lives as they want to without having to worry about others.

The Mexican children were mixed up in two cultures and that was very difficult for them since they were not aware of the culture to follow and the one to leave (Tatum, 2006). That it is very difficult especially in a situation where one does not know that they can actually follow the two cultures. That is because people had not started to embrace diversity thus the children had to ensure that they followed one culture despite the challenges that came with it. It is shocking to realize that innocent children had to suffer just because they had been born Mexicans and they could not even be treated like the other children. For example, the old woman could be ridiculed for trying to heal people despite the fact that she was always there when one needed help. She tried her best to help those that were sick and despite her old age, she could always ensure that she was of help to those that needed her help. However, they could ridicule her even after she had helped them. That is very wrong since the people that are in the society should always ensure that they get to help each other if need be. They should also show gratitude where it is required. However, they could not notice the efforts that were being made by the old women despite her old age. That was very wrong since they even went ahead to ridicule her even after she had helped them. That shows that the society did not have any morals since the people in it did not mind about the feelings of the other people and that is why they found it fine to ridicule an old woman.
In the Circuit story, the Mexicans had to move from place to place in search of work. They could move with seasons in order to look for places where work was available for them and they could work in the farms of the Americans. That did not favor the students since they did not have the chance to get to school in good time. At times they could even hide on seeing a school bus in order to ensure that they could not get in trouble for failing to attend school. The children loved going to school but they knew that they also had to work and that is why they understood the situation. When the author had to go back to school, she sympathized with her brother since he was not to get back to school until the cotton season came to an end. The story is saddening since the children had a hard time growing up since they had to work and education to them was not a necessity since they could only go to school when they were not working yet the other children were going to school every day. They could be overworked in those farms despite the fact that they were still young.
The Mexican Americans were also discriminated against in the society. That shows that they did not live in a good society since they were not able to carry out their activities in peace since they could often be discriminated against by the other people in the society. For example, while in school some teachers could say that the Mexicans are not supposed to be given a chance to talk. That was very wrong since it also encouraged the American students to discriminate and ridicule the Mexican students. That was very unethical for teachers to do since they are the people that should be showing all the students on how they could live and work together without having to discriminate other students. That could make life difficult for the Mexican students since they could feel that they were not wanted in the schools since they were not Americans. That could affect their concentration in class and it also discouraged them from going to school since they believed that they were not wanted. Being discriminated against creates a lot of remorse feelings and it also results to self-pity. That is because one starts believing that they are not good enough and that was the case with those students since they started seeing themselves to be inferior compared to the American Students and maybe they also started hating themselves and their origin as well. The teachers did a very great mistake in discriminating against the Mexican students since they could even contributed to conflicts between the students and by that it was very difficult for the students to work together or even stand each other since they could not accept the differences that they had.
The book also shows that many people have suffered in their lives just because of their ethnicity. That is because there is discrimination and people are actually discriminated for who they are and that contributes a great deal in denying them certain opportunities. For example, it could be very difficult for the Mexicans to be employed in good jobs since it was believed that all they could do was work in the farms of the Americans. That is very wrong since it denied them a chance of being employed and making their lives better. They lived in poverty just because their chances of succession were blocked by the Americans thus they did not have a way to improve their ways of lives. It was also very difficult for them to attain education without difficulties and that made it hard for them to compete with the American students since the American students did not have any obstacles while attaining their education. Therefore, only the American students could get good jobs just because they could be able to perform better in school. That was not right at all since those children had a very difficult time growing up there. It is very difficult for one to grow up knowing that they do not have any chances to prosper just because they are seen to be inferior compared to other children (Pez, 2003). Those children suffered greatly and life was not very good to them. They went through many experiences but they are the experiences that made them want to better their lives despite the challenges that they could go through.
Women also went through many problems during that time. That is because the Mexican women were seen to be useless and they could be treated in the wrong way. That it is not right since they were just the same as the American women. During those times, diversity was something that was not known thus people could treat each other in the wrong way since they believed that they were superior compared to the others. Feminism also rose during that time since they believed that the right of the Mexican women had to be advocated since they were going through great problems thus they were living a very difficult life. Men and women are the same thus women should not be treated in the wrong way. The book is saddening since someone should not receive harsh treatment just because of their gender. The society should be a place that unites all the people that are in it and a society should have unity and love thus the people in the society should always look out for each other in order to ensure that they are all fine and none of the people in the society are suffering just because of things that can be avoided in the society. A society should always ensure that differences should be accepted if there are any.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it is evident that it was a very hard time for the children that were growing up in Chicana/o. They had very limited opportunities just because they were not Americans and they also had to face discrimination just because of their ethnicity. That is very wrong for a society to make innocent children go through a hard time just because of their ethnicity. People in a society should always aim at uniting all the people in the society rather than driving them apart. Growing Up in Chicana/o was very difficult especially since Mexican Americans were not treated as the other people and there were very many stereotypes regarding them as well.
