Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR)The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) is a public health agency under the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The body has the vision to be the most trusted agency that protects the American people from the environmental health threats through applying a state-of-the-art science. It also works under the mission to protect the public from exposure and adverse human health effects and the diminished quality of life that may be associated with the hazardous substances at the waste sites and any other pollutants that are present in the environment. The agency usually employs the best science to serve the public, it takes responsive public health actions and informs the public with trusted health information so as to prevent them from exposure to harmful environments and illnesses that arise from toxic substances. The agency is usually directed by the congressional mandate to conduct some specific functions that concern the impact of hazardous materials on public health. Some of the functions include health surveillance and registries, educating and informing the public about hazardous substances, health consultation about some specific harmful substances, and public health assessment of the existing waste sites. At the agency, the commissioned corps officers are usually attached to tasks as per their scientific or managerial knowledge. Although most of the employees at the agency are classified as environmental health officers or engineers, there are also some other officers from other professions that are also attached at the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR)
Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (ASH)
The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (ASH) is an agency under the leadership of the health secretary, and he or she is also the senior advisor on matters concerning public health and science-related issues to the Department of Health and Human Services secretary.

OASH is entitled to oversee twelve core civic health offices, including the Surgeon General office and the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (“Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH)”). The office has a mission to promote better health services to the public by ensuring that the public health is maintained at a high level by the help of better scientific methods. Moreover, its objective is to ensure that that the department of health and human services provides directives that will ensure that the public is served with quality healthcare (“Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH)”). The ASH is usually a uniformed or a civilian member of the regular corps, and he or she is a presidential appointee who serves for a four-year term. Moreover, it also oversees ten regional health offices that are spread across the U.S and the ten presidential advisory committees. The agency also serves as the central point of leadership and coordination in the department of health and human services on matters concerning public health and science. The office also gives direction to the program offices within the ASH agency. Moreover, the agency can also give counsel and advice to the health secretary concerning science and public health issues (“Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH)”). As a government agency for health, OASH ensures that the department promotes good quality services to the American people and ensure that good legislation are put in place to improve public health and science.
