The Digestive System
The breakdown of foods starts in the mouth where the food is mixed with saliva while it is broken down to small pieces. While the food is in the mouth, the salivary glands are triggered to produce saliva a compound that helps in digesting food. The food moves through the esophagus through a process called peristalsis. In the stomach various cells, produce acids that help to increase the PH (Zanini et al., 1880) The acids help to kill bacteria and start the chemical breakdown of the food. Peristalsis helps to mix the food in the stomach. Once it is well mixed, it moves into the small intestine in the form of the chime.
The food passes through the duodenum where the liver mixes in bile. The bile helps to break down the food even further. The pancreas also releases digestive enzymes that aid in even further digestion. Most of the nutrients get absorbed at the small intestines. The large intestine is the last stage of the food before the waste product moves to the rectum.
The mouth plays a vital role in breaking down the food into smaller parts to aid in the digestion process. The stomach has the significant role of increase the foods PH thus allowing other enzymes to work on it. The liver produces bile that aid in the process of digestion. The small intestine produces enzymes that further digest the food and also helps in the abortion of the nutrients.
