Abstract
In crafting a work of fiction, authors use different elements. Among the elements that go into pieces of writing are setting, plot, and character. These elements need a lot of author’s attention because stories revolve around them. Character and setting play a crucial role in driving the plot events in a story. The role of a character in a story is crucial. A reader will only be interested to read the whole story if he or she connects with the characters in the story. Every story revolves around a character doing a thing or planning to do something for a reason. The reader of a story needs to understand why the main character acts the way he or she does to understand the whole story. The setting, in every story, is also vital. It is the place where the story takes place. It helps the reader to understand the events in the story. For example, a story set in the city in the 21st Century and another in a remote village in the 18th Century would have different tones, word choice and characters’ decisions among others. William Faulkner’s story, ‘A Rose for Emily,’ applies these elements effectively.

Different elements are important in a story. They help to make the reader understand the story at a deeper level. The elements of a story include character, plot, and settings among others. Character and setting are very important because they drive the plot events of a story.

William Faulkner’s story, ‘A Rose for Emily,’ helps to show the importance of character and setting in telling a story.
In the story, the author makes the reader understand Emily appropriately. From a narrator’s point of view, the author makes the reader see why Emily behaves the way she does. For example, Emily’s father used to drive off all the suitors that came for her (Serravalle & Faulkner, 1930). This makes the reader understand why she is desperate to have any man in her life. When she gets a man who is not in her social class, she falls in love with him, which is a weird thing to do at the time. Her desperateness of having another person in her life drives the plot events of the whole story. For example, she holds on to her dead father because she does not want to be left alone. She also buys arsenic and poisons her lover because she does not want him to leave her alone. By understanding the character, the reader understands her actions.
In every story, the setting is important because it drives the plot events of the story. For example, Faulkner’s story is set in a traditional town that still holds traditional values dearly. When Emily’s father drives off her suitors, she does not go against his will and fall in love with them as a modern-day girl would do. This explains why she becomes desperate as years go by. The setting of the story also explains why the town people do not understand Emily’s actions. At that time, having sex before marriage was unheard of. The people of the town viewed Emily as a loose woman because she would have sex with Homer even though they were not married (Serravalle & Faulkner, 1930). Therefore, they avoided her, and this contributed to Rose’s desperation because she did not have friends. By understanding the setting of the story, the reader understands why the town’s people avoided Emily and how Emily’s desperation came into play.
As shown, setting and character, help the reader understand the story as it unfolds. These elements help the reader to get into the situation of the characters in the story. William Faulkner uses them appropriately to make the reader understand his story.
