The Miracle Worker
The dialogue from the play reveals the perception and attitude James holds towards his mother, Kate. James cuts himself midway realizing he almost responds to his father angrily choosing to say that he will be moving ‘Mrs. Keller’ rather than the plants (Gibson 20). This reference to his mother as Mrs Keller while speaking to her and mother while confirming her presence demonstrates his resentment towards her (perhaps from her actions towards Helen) and attempt to feign aloofness.
In the first dialogue, the Captain tells his daughter about her mother’s absence at a time when Helen longs for Kate. With a sad reflection on his relationship with both his children, he reveals to the audience how he does not get along with James and has no close relationship with Helen. The manner in which he delivers the information comes forth as a statement of negative facts the final one being the delayed supper news.
From the second dialogue, Captain Keller comes forth as pessimistic. After hearing of young Annie’s past from Kate, his sense of doubt that a formerly blind young girl straight from school could control the unruly Helen. This pessimism arises from the fact that no adult present in the household managed to control Helen.
The letter is easier to understand than the play. The play requires the audience to capture the circumstances surrounding the scene and their relation to the manner in which the characters speak.
The quotation reveals Annie as a well-raised individual with a zeal for discipline.

This perspective is necessary as Annie displays by managing to teach Helen to conduct herself with discipline.
This statement by Kate reveals her tendency to spoil Helen to get her to act accordingly. However, the sentiment should be discouraged as it further aggravates the issue as evidenced by the admittance of the failure of this tactic.
Annie’s frustration in this statement demonstrated her lack of faith in Captain Keller’s tactic of daily assurance. Though some form of optimism from Captain Keller serves to motivate Keller, the fact that Helen lives her life blind reveals the abstract truth behind this statement. That Helen goes on to document her life’s journey, however, reveals some form of manifestation of Keller’s dream through Annie’s teaching.
The statement reveals Annie’s understanding of Captain Keller’s lack of faith in Annie’s teaching. This is true since the Captain’s pessimism leads him to doubt Annie’s ability to teach Helen eliminating any hope that she could ever learn.
Helen’s behaviour in the play does not reflect normal child behavior and is significantly influenced by the constant rewarding by her parents. One example occurs just before the ‘capturing flies with honey’ quotation when Kate intervenes between the conflicting Annie and Helen to give her a sweet to get her to sleep (Gibson 45).
While discussing the garden house, Annie and Captain Keller maintain formal communication. Annie seems to be in control as she gets her request approved and manages to fool Helen that she travels away from home.
