The “The Public Enemy” film analysis.
The film by the title “The Public Enemy” is a pre-code movie produced and distributed by Warner Bros. The movie was managed by William A. Wellman also of other stars such as Jean Harlow, Edward Woods, Cagney, Joan Blondell as well as Donald Cook. The film is all about a young man who has risen in the criminal underworld in America (A. Wellman 22). The supporting players were Beryl Mercer, Mae Clarke, and Murray Kinnell. The film has brought out the real picture we are living today in all aspects of economics, socially, technology-wise through the actors such as Tom power and Mae Clarke as shown below
The modern cinema has consistently glamorized the gangster’s life. For the case of the “public enemy” film of 1931, which is one of the oldest crime classics, it doesn’t show the spectacular light as well the prestigious life of the thugs, in fact, the thug’s life is evidently clear from the film as sympathetic one (A. Wellman 23). According to Tom Powers, the main character in the movie, money as well as the extravagance live will only come when one breaks the laws. The two scenarios show clearly that in the society there are two types of people the good ones as well as the wrong people. Tom represents the thugs, criminals as well as the evil doers in the society whereas Mae his elder brother serve the right people in the community who are a good role model.
The film portrays how the high-class people use money as a mean of attracting the young people to criminal activities.in the film “public enemy” tom as a hopeless young adult is introduced to criminal business “big jobs” by Paddy Ryan. Paddy Ryan was a disreputable leader of gangs whose intention is to use the hopeless and the easily corrupted people in the society in his bootlegging business (A. Wellman 24). The films show that the Toms Power society was not stable economically which prompted to most of the youth to indulge in criminal activities. In that gang, Tom meets Matt Doyle whom they carried crime together. Matt Doyle was to assist on the tough due to his masculine body. Tom robs liquor warehouses when the opening of Prohibition and then hide in his new world imminent doom as well as that of savagery, thereafter he becomes more fierce and aggressive when it comes to people who tend to oppose his lifestyle which makes him more despicable in comparison with his rivals.
The film also portrays Tom’s family to be very poor economically which a might have tempted him to indulge in criminal activities. Tom is seen visiting his mother (Beryl Mercer) to assist her financially. In fact, Mae terms the cash as dirty showing how morally upright he was. According to the Mae, his moral doctrine does not allow him to use money that was obtained through criminal activities as he led a very respectable of which he has gained little from it. Similarly, in the modern society, most of those who live a holy tend to live a miserable life whereas the thugs live in extravagance lives (A. Wellman 25). Through the savagery live, Tom has risen to be a very wealthy, powerful as well as a prominent crook in the society. His popularity is ironical in that it only altered by the shocking as well as the right conclusion, whereby questionably skewed property is brutally served.
The technological advancement in the contemporary world in the film sector has rendered the “The Public Enemy” not to be the most shocking gangster film of the time. The modern films endeavor with a strong message, striking violence in addition to current sexuality (A. Wellman 26). In the contemporary film such as Hollywood, the criminal activities are very strict. It is clear that in 1930’s Hollywood, illegal activities must have repercussions, although the roaring disclaimer at the close reduces merely the influence of Powers as a notable fictional.
In a nutshell, it is evidently true that the film is an accurate representation of both the positive side and the negative side of the society. The characters such as Tom power and Mae Clarke have been used to portray what the makes up a community.
