The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
In 1939, James Thurber published an exceptional story called The Secret Life of Walter Mitty that was later adapted into a movie produced by Goldwyn Jr and directed by Ben Stiller in 2013 under the same title. It is a famous story about a man continually sliding into the world of fantasies. Dissatisfaction is the story’s primary theme where it shows how individuals unhappily go on with their daily lives. Thurber uses plot and characterization to bring out the theme of dissatisfaction in the story.
The plot has been used to highlight the theme of dissatisfaction as the story alternates between reality and scenes of fantasy. The story revolves around the main character, Mitty, escaping from his real life by daydreaming (Goldwyn & Stiller, 2013). Mitty’s fantasies revolve around his love and career life. He wishes for a better life than the one he currently lives. The illusions show how Mitty is unhappy with his life and turns to daydreams as a way to escape his reality.
Thurber uses characterization to bring out the theme of dissatisfaction by making Mitty a tool to display the theme. The malcontent Mitty is a simple aging man who is unhappy with the way people close to him see him as an incompetent man who is unable to run his life as expected of him. His fantasies even hinder him from doing the simple things in life because they make him forgetful (Thurber, 2008). The character shows how people dissatisfied with their lives fail to live a happy life because they do not live in reality.
