The Culture of Kenya

Kenya is a multi-racial and multi-ethnic country and it takes its name from Mount Kenya situated in the central highlands. The nation is rich in culture, wildlife, beauty, history, and pleasant, welcoming individuals. Seemingly, it is one of the country’s which has a very interesting culture especially with regards to food, geographical location, marriage and family and political structure.

Geographically, the country is attractive and diverse from extensive forests, snow-capped mounts to vast-open plains (Advameg,Inc. Para 1). The geographical attractions comprise the Great Rift Valley which has extinct hot-springs and volcanoes and a coastline that is thorough with ridges and superb beaches with well-developed tourists setups such as hotels. All this combined makes it a popular destination for tourists attracting millions of visitors’ annually.

I have been fascinated by Kenya’s culture for the longest time, studying, and reading about the culture many times.
Thesis Statement:
From the exquisite culture, people and attractions, Kenya remains the perfect destination for tourists and everyone.
Geographical Location
Geographically, Kenya is a nation situated in East Africa bordering Ethiopia to the North, Somalia in Northeast, Sudan to Northwest, Tanzania to the South, Uganda to the west and the Indian Ocean to the East. Moreover, Nairobi is Kenya’s biggest city and capital situated in the central highlands the peak point being Mount Kenya (Informationcradle 1).

Notably, the country shares the largest lake in Africa, the Lake Victoria which grazes through the highlands.
2) Kenya is also the home of the world’s outstanding wildlife comprising of lions, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, elephants and several lovely and exceptional species of birds. Unluckily, their population is being threatened by poachers and the large population of people. For that reason, the government has established strict laws regulating poaching.
II.Food
With regards to food, Maize is the staple food for the people of Kenya. The maize is ground into flour and prepared as ugali and porridge (Nicci Para. 2). Boiled greens called mboga and cooked bananas known as matoke are some of the common side dishes of the people.
However, this does not apply to everyone since the primary food for the herders is milk and fish is popular around Lake Victoria and on the Coast.
On the other hand, palm wine, tea mixed with milk and sugar, and beer are common drinks for Kenyans’. Particularly, the beer is created locally by Kenya Breweries. Not to forget the special dish of nyama choma (roasted meat) this is loved by almost every Kenyan mostly eaten during ceremonial occasions (Nicci Para. 2).
Marriage and Family
The culture of marriage and family in Kenya is a very interesting and evolving aspect.For one, polygamy was fully embraced by Kenyan’s in the past and a man could have 4 to 6 wives and it would not be a big deal. However, the practice is reducing and becoming less usual in today’s generation for it has been opposed by missionaries and is gradually impossible since very few men can afford to maintain many wives. This can be explained with the recent high costs of life.
Bride price has a huge value for Kenyans; the groom pays the price in the form of money or cattle to the girl’s father. Traditionally, the man built a house for his wife and children and the builds a hut for himself separately. The situation is slightly different now because many families live together and when the boys are older they are given shelters outside. However, this is not the case with the Maasai; their houses are divided into four sections which are houses for the woman, the husband, the children and the kitchen. Regarding inheritance, the father passes his property to his son, and it still remains hard for a woman to receive inheritance both legally and culturally. In much as things have changed, marriage was valued then especially in the rural areas and is valued even more now (Wandibba 1).
Political Structure
The political structure of Kenya should be emulated by different countries. The president is nominated by members of the national assembly and then elected by a popular vote for a term of 5 years. After, he’s selected he becomes the head of the government and chief of state and the constitution approves of multiple parties (Brussel Para. 1).
Conclusion
The brief explanation demonstrates that the culture of Kenya values marriage, visitors, wildlife, nature, and good leadership. It shows the beautiful aspects that attract millions of tourists from different places to come watch learn and experience the goodness and beauty that Kenya has to offer.
Whatever the case, Kenya remain the perfect destination for tourists and all since it is the best place to be.
