What philosophies, approaches, and interventions do they have in common?
Rood, PNF, Brunnstrom, and NDT are traditional sensorimotor approaches used as treatment interventions among clients with CVA. Task-Oriented Approach is the latest intervention. All these interventions rely on the fact that the brain of stroke patients cannot manage to coordinate motor control and movement of muscles. These interventions lead to somatosensory stimulation and can, therefore, be used to invoke motor response (Pendleton & Krohn, 2018). All the movements are aimed at inducing muscle tone and increasing muscle strength. After repeated interventions, the client displays developmental patterns which facilitate motor skills and functionality. On a summative note, all these interventions improve functional performance and allow the client to engage in activities of daily living with ease.
How do these approaches contradict each other?
While PNF, NDT, Rood, and Brunnstrom are traditional sensorimotor approaches, the task-oriented approach is one of the latest interventions in the treatment of stroke patients. The task-oriented approach is based on the dynamic interaction between the client, environment and occupational tasks. NDT relies on the impairment of the central nervous system to facilitate coordination, muscle tone, postural balance and muscle movement (Pendleton & Krohn, 2018). The Rood approach is based on the idea that specific sensory stimulation facilitates motor response.

Brunnstrom outline the motor recovery stages which can facilitate movement from reflexive to volitional through synergy patterns. PNF, on the other hand, is based on both the reflexive and hierarchical models of motor control.
What are the pros and cons of ‘hanging onto’ traditional approaches, vs. progressing forward with newer approaches that have a stronger research basis?
Therapists developed traditional sensorimotor approaches during treatment sessions. They offer a hands-on approach to address some of the challenges that stroke patients encounter in the quest to facilitate motor movement. They help strengthen and reinforce correct motor response through sensory stimulation and the use of sensory inputs (Pendleton & Krohn, 2018). Traditional approaches can be combined to form an eclectic mix. Progressive approaches rely on the dynamic system model to determine which intervention or approach is best suited for a client. However, the primary limitation of traditional approaches is they do not actively engage a client’s motivation to engage in a particular motor act because the approach follows a prescribed path.
