The Vietnam War started in the 1950’s where the Northern government of Vietnam and their allies from the south, the Viet Cong, were in conflict with the South Vietnam and the United States. The conflict started when the Northern government of Vietnam and the Viet Cong tried to nationalize Vietnam using communist rule, and the Southern government of Vietnam in collaboration with the United States government fought to prevent communism.
The North Vietnam and the Viet Cong thought the war was justifiable since they fought to unite Vietnam. To them, the conflict was a colonial war since they regarded the South Vietnam as a state being controlled by the United States. They wanted to use the communist rule to reunify Vietnam (Herring, 18).
The North Vietnam and Viet Cong tried to take over the South Vietnam through communism hence the U.S. government involvement in the war. The U.S. government had a containment policy whose goal was to prevent communism from spreading. The U.S. government wanted to prevent South Vietnam from falling under the influence of the communist (Herring, 18).
In 1973 the United States government withdrew their forces from South Vietnam. The communists took control of Saigon which was the capital of South Vietnam resulting to the end of the Vietnam War. The U.S. government was unsuccessful in the cold war after the communist reunified the country after taking control of Saigon (Lind).
In conclusion, the Vietnam War was a result of the conflict between the Northern Government of Vietnam and the Southern government of Vietnam with the assist of U.
