Analysis of the Pathos
Thesis Statement
In 2001, David Sedaris was named as the humorist by Time Magazine. He grew up in North Carolina, and after graduating from the Institute of Art in Chicago, he later moved to New York and engaged in various odd jobs. In 1993, he launched his new career as a humorist, after reading Santa Land Diaries on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition. Also, in 2001, Sedaris received the Thurber prize for American humour after contributing to various commentaries on the Public Radio’s Morning Edition. The paper presented focuses on pathos and its persuasion by appealing to the reader’s emotions on the analysis of the book “Remembering my Childhood on the Continent of Africa.”, (Sedaris, 251)
Analysis of the Ethiopian Road Trip
During his fifth grade, Hugh and his classmates took a field trip to see the Ethiopian slaughter house. Since Hugh was residing in Addis Ababa, the trip was arranged owing to its convenience so that they could get a chance to learn something new outside their school curriculum, (Kopelson, 190). During their tour, the class witnessed the scenes of a wrinkled man feeding on rotten goat meat and feeding some to hyenas. At the slaughterhouse, they witnessed a pig get shot straight in the head. They also visited the bedroom of a former dictator where they saw stained curtains covered in blood. However, such childhood stories lack the gist and motion associated with comic stories, thus making them seem dull and full of fuss (Sedaris, 251).

Analysis of a Visit to the Theatre
It is true and evident enough that the different childhood upbringing and mode of socialization impact people in different ways as they grow up. For example, when Hugh comes out of the theatre and finds a man hanging on a telephone pole, he is shock stricken because he is not used to such scenes. Moreover, while he stands and stares as the man hangs on the telephone pole, his father runs and picks him up to his amazement. If this were to happen to any child, it would terrify him to death as he dashes home to tell of this news to his parents. Surprisingly, Hugh keeps calm and forgets he ever saw the incident, (Sedaris, 253).
Analysis of Life in Somalia
Hugh and his family pack up to move to Somalia. In Somalia, he faced serious communication challenges because of the lack of English speaking schools. After a few months of staying in Somalia, he decided to go back to Ethiopia to stay with his father. Besides, the communication with Hugh was quite hard since there were no telephone services Ethiopia and Somalia, where I lived, (Kilgore, 19). The lack of telephone services derailed our communication because we relied on writing letters, which often reached very late. Although, life in Somalia was tough and difficult to cope, Hugh was courageous and determined to ensure that he enjoyed the place no matter the struggles (Sedaris, 251).
From the analysis of the book “Remembering my Childhood on the Continent of Africa,” the following key aspects can be deduced:
Every child has a different childhood background and upbringing, which may produce positive or negative impacts on their livelihood.
The thesis is implied.
The irony is that, while Sedaris, only holds on the assumptions and adventures of childhood, Hugh’s childhood was interrupted on numerous occasions because he kept relocating. In addition to the loneliness, Hugh kept changing friends and lack the stability associated with childhood. The article concentrates on the family aspect of Hugh and the childhood upbringing that included shelter and food. However, he seemed to be lonely for the most part of his childhood because even his birthday is not mentioned (Sedaris, 253).
CONCLUSION
The story depicts the aspect that every child has a story to tell that may have positive or negative impacts on their lives. In order to have a good socialization process, every child needs to enjoy fully their upbringing and keep track of the memories they had in their childhood. In life, things may change when least expected, but on a seal of fate, life gives one a second chance to showcase what they are capable of accomplishing. It is through determination that children can make it to their lands of dreams and enjoy everything they’ve always longed to achieve. Be that part and that motivation of what you want to achieve in life and do it passionately.
