Choosing Newsworthy Material
Deciding on whether the information you have is consequential enough to warrant a story is an integral part of any writer’s job. Often the dilemma also includes how to add the data deemed inconsequential to one’s story and make it interesting. The factors to consider while evaluating the information gathered are the impact the data will make, how controversial it is, the closeness of the data to the readers, and the subjects of the data.
Information bound to leave an impression on your readers is essential to any story. Rogers (1) suggests that material that can influence the readers’ lives more profoundly is a front-page story. Conflict, of any nature, typically piques the interest of human beings. Information that is contrary to common beliefs or that describes an event where disagreements ensued is likely to garner more attention. A story involving death or loss of property is also considered fascinating.
The readers should identify with the data one aims at presenting meaning that the events should have occurred near them. Proximity is especially crucial for regional news. The people or places discussed in the article should be well recognized. Politicians and celebrities will attract more attention as a lot of people invest in what they do or what happens to them (Rogers 1). Incorporating wit and comedy in an article would be a great way to add the mundane information to a story (Jasheway 1). Including visual etchings in the story to enhance humor or describe an event serves as a great way of adding something less critical to the story.

While evaluating one’s sources, it is important to consider the repercussions that information will have and how contradictory the data might be to common beliefs. One should also factor in the proximity of the information and the featured individuals. Following these guidelines, it will be possible to make a story that not only captivates the readers but also adequately informs them of the events around them.
