THE WHITE KNIGHT’S SONG
The poem begins by the poet emphasizing that the need to be as transparent as possible though there will no relation of the poem and possibly his present situation whatsoever. The poet is seen to be bewildered on the response given by the aged man because the aged man explained how hard he had to work so as to get some wealth to sustain himself but the poet had no plans of working. The poet was a lazy man and that is why he approached an aged man so as to find a way to get by without getting bored.
The poet asked him the same question again and the old man gave him a different response that entailed working where he would find a mountain-rill set it ablaze and produce Rowland’s Macassar Oil which would go for Halfpenny. But the poet was thinking of a way to feed himself on a batter and get fatter from day to day which showed that the poet was lazy.
As much as the responses from the aging man involved hard work they were too good to be true for an aging man. The last response entailed the old man searching in the grassy knolls for wheels of hansom-cabs appears to be the aging man’s occupation since he winked and concluded by saying that after getting his wealth he goes for a drink. Upon hearing the response the poet realizes the idea of preventing his Menai bridge design from rust by boiling it in wine. After which he later buys a drink for the aging man.
The poet also dreads to age since he says that whenever he puts his fingers in glue, squeezes a right-hand foot into a left-hand shoe or drop in his toe it reminds him of the old man whose speech was slow and hair like a crow.
