Why I want to become a nurse
Besides being a career, nursing is both a treasure and a calling (Watson). To me, this profession is more than a job, I perceive it as being more of an adventure. Importantly, it is a continuous learning experience in which one seeks to unravel new tasks and life changing events each day.
I got inspired to become a nurse back in high school. It is during this time that I decided to join a club labeled ‘Medical Explorers’ which later totally changed my perceptions. This entity exposed me to the various aspects of the nursing profession. The essential functions of the human body and its complex interaction with the environment in the background of genetics aroused my interest. Besides, I developed a significant interest in making a positive impact on patients’ lives.
I firmly believe in my caring and compassionate attitude. I intend to take advantage of this quality in offering services to the sick. With this, I will be able to uplift the emotions of patients while quelling their anxiety as I offer my services to them. Of the numerous fields I have had to explore during my lower levels of learning, the nursing profession has always stood out. This field has always sparked my interest inspiring a notion in me that pursuing this course will enable me fulfill my interests.
During my free time, I had the opportunity to research on both the basics and details of the nursing profession. I perused through a few published statistics that are relevant to healthcare.

My discovery was a little perplexing. I noticed a worrying dearth of nurses in the major hospital in the nation. The low nurse-patient ratio translates to a situation in which the contact time between a patient and a nurse is minimal (Linda et al). Further, this means that care cannot be individualized due to a large number of patients with a fixed number of nurses. In my opinion, patients will have a better outlook if they receive adequate attention and care. Because of this shortage of nursing professionals, my contribution will make an impact towards realizing better healthcare. I intend to dedicate my time to patients and offer undivided attention.
Moreover, my analysis enabled me to discover that there exist many other subspecialties in the field of nursing such as ICU, ER, Nursing in medical surgery and many others. This served to peak my interest in this profession due to the perceived diverse nature of nursing. This means that pursuing nursing will offer me a vast choice to select from and allow me to be placed in areas that I will fit best. Further, with such opportunities, I will be able to fulfill the varied needs of my patients.
Further, as a nurse, my assistance will not only be limited in the bounds of hospital structures. My ambition is to assist people both inside and outside healthcare institutions such as hospitals and dispensaries. As a qualified nurse, I will have the opportunity of positively impacting peoples’ lives in the society. I intend to use the knowledge acquired in training to influence the society and offer tips on how to live a healthy lifestyle. Previously, I have had to impact peoples’ lives though in a subtle way. However, engaging in training and finally becoming a licensed nurse will only work to make this valid.
