In the story, A Bell for Adano the author sets it during the Second World War 2 period. The major character who is Major Jappolo strives to restore the lost bell to the Italian American. Later he gains popularity amongst the people of Adano town. In this thesis, I am going to make an assumption that by the end of the story the mission failed. The basis of our argument, therefore, will be based on determining if Major Jappolo was a successful leader or not.In my opinion, Major Jappolo is a great success in the town still. When he visits the city, he is concerned for the welfare of the residents within. He tries to find out what was their major problem so as he can get a solution for them. For instance, he gives both of his representatives an opportunity to give their concern; the first complains of the food shortage within the town. He makes it clear to Major that most of the day’s residents stayed without taking any meal. The other spokesman complained of the anxiety that people had to get back their lost bell. For about seven hundred years they had remained without their bell. As a leader, he made a critical decision and decided to pay his focus on the bell. Major Jappolo took it as an urgent issued and started working to get back the Bell. According to them, the bell symbolized unity and pride.
Consequently, Major Jappolo spent part of his time to supply food and other necessities to the town. At the process of trying to know why the offer of the fish is low in the town, he discovers that the fishermen had not gone out for some time.

Wait! A Bell for Adano paper is just an example!

By investigating, he found out that it was as a result of corruption protection funds. Immediately as a leader, he orders Tomasino to ensure there is nobody that should get a subjection to any bribe or exaggerated figure of taxes to the American fishermen. Through such action, he portrays good leadership tactics of ensuring the common citizens comfortable. The intention is to make sure there is a stable supply of Fish in the town. Therefore Jappolo is a successful leader who aims to serve humanity other than other managers who concentrate on themselves.
Also, major Jappolo is a wise leader who knows how to communicate to his servants effectively. This gets a high consideration since it promotes unity. (Hersey, 2006)Therefore, maintenance of unity is one of the core objectives. To attain his goal when he faces a challenge of differing of ideologies with General Marvin, he softly solves the issue. He considers to prioritize his people rather than maintaining his position as a mayor. He, therefore, countermands General Marvin’s order. Hel advises his people to start putting in the use of the carts within the town. Together with other things, the carts will help in supplying water within the city. Therefore, first Jappolo is a thoughtful leader who works to ensure that the interests of both parties are getting consideration. For instance, Major General’s order of keeping all mule carts out the town could lead to water shortage in the city.
The struggle of retrieving the bell which is a sign of pride was a motivating factor to major Jappolo. By promoting unity, the people should first develop intrinsic brotherhood. They should have a right feeling of good governance. (Price, 2004)To agree with Major that he is the pride of the people he is serving, whenever he makes any decision he tries to take the path that will favor the ordinary citizens. For instance, he risks losing his job for the sake of defending the interests of the individuals in the town. The short-tempered commander of America sacks him when he fails to put in place his order of prohibiting Mule carts. Despite all those shortcomings, Jappolo stayed firm since he knew the mule carts were the essential supply of water within the town.
Together with those, the bell aimed to promote unity. Major Jappolo as a leader leads by an example by sharing a drink with Lieutenant. In the process of taking some drink, the major gets a chance to give the concerns of the people. At this point, he explains how the people in the town they had yearned for the bell. Though the search of the signal courage that major exhibits shows what a good leader should manifest. Good leaders should work to meet the promises that they make to their servants or everyday citizens. Therefore by major Jappolo striving in all means to ensure the interests or all the promises he deals with he is then a successful leader.
To sum up, the Major Jappolo’s struggle to get back the bell is a success. Through the struggling democracy, the privilege of free and fair fishing, and freedom of the use of the mule carts within the town. Therefore, in our life we should endure the struggles we go through so has to succeed.
