A brilliant mind, live with schizophrenia

 

The film based on real events develops in a prestigious university in the United States 1947, which was very competitive and focused on individual success and scientific work. In addition the American lifestyle stimulated competitiveness. John Nash Main character in history was a recognized mathematician, lonely, only dedicated to numbers and science. Jhon was conservative, introverted, cold and somewhat egocentric. Upon arriving at Princeton University, he receives the prestigious Carnegie scholarship for mathematics with Martin Hansen . Here is where Jhon’s story and problems begins when he falls victim to pressure and stress that feels to hold the head of the Department of Mathematics as for the rivalry he maintains with Hansen to excel in his studies and be able to publish. From the sociocultural point of view, success translates into earning money, and thus, enjoying the things that can be purchased. Further strengthening Nash delusions and obsessions.

In the first scenes of the film, Jhon’s obsession is more than apparent to do something new, in order to leave his brand and thus feel happy and satisfied. He was not enough to capture his paper ideas but that the windows of his apartment marked with mathematical equations were part of his "methods" of study. In these first Jhon scenes suffer from hallucinations although they are not noticeable for him or for the people around him. Among his first hallucinations is the creation of his friend Charles, who was his fourth partner at the University.

Nash used his mathematical mind in almost every aspect of his life. Patcher had an enigmatic and silent character that greatly influences John’s imaginary activities. Nash became violent, totally uncontrolled when Patcher presented himself. In another Patcher perspective, Nash allowed to meet their needs to be recognized and feel important for their achievements, since his supposed work was secret and of great value to the United States or thus believed.

Marcee is the third hallucination of Nash, niece of Charles, which he treats like his niece. His friend Charles and Marcee worked in Jhon’s mind to gratify their deficiencies to protect and be protected, with this feeling loved and welcomed by others.

In 1959, John gave a conference on Riemann’s hypothesis at Columbia University, and something failed to arrive in Patcher. The presentation was erratic, becoming the first sign that something was wrong. It is emotional to see how the role of family and friends is essential for John’s "recovery".

Alicia, John’s wife, is perhaps the greatest and most safe light that shines in the cloud darkness of Jhon’s life and as mentioned before if it were not for her infinite love for him, I do not believe that he would never have understood his reality.

Personally, however difficult it is to say, I do not think I can live with a person suffering from schizophrenia. Losing complete contact with reality is extremely difficult for the patient, but more difficult for those who have to observe it. Loving someone before developing the disorder and seeing the way it changes dramatically over time can be exhausting and frustrating.

Despite the fact that Jhon Nash’s story and life develops in the 40s, it is worth noting that he has changed a lot since then. Today there are mechanisms, treatments and solutions that would help a patient and their families to work with the reality that surrounds this condition in other ways. The advances in science and findings that allowed treatments such as insulinotherapy no longer practice, create an encouraging panorama for mental disease management.
