What is a State?
A state is a term that can be defined as the community that is formed by a specific group of people and they can exercise their power which is permanent in specified territorial boundaries (Lakshminarayanan). A state should possess the following characteristics; well-defined territory, government, a permanent population, the ability to engage in relationships with the other states.
What is a Nation?
On the hand, a nation refers to as the one where most of its occupants or citizens are brought together or united by a common factor(s) such as religion, common customs, origin, language, or similarity in the descent.
What is Sovereignty?
This term is used to refer to the full power and right of the body governing over its own matters without any form of interference from the outside powers or sources (Lakshminarayanan). It involves the designation of the supreme powers and authority over a given nation or entity. The term sovereignty also refers to the autonomy and independence of the nation states in the modern era.
Discuss the desire by some segments of America today to secede from the U.S. and declare themselves as independent “states” (and already consider themselves separate “nations”).
The movement for secession currently involves almost half of the states in the United States. However, this in interpretation is looked at as having more in common than the support they have for the greater country (National Public Radio).

It becomes much more necessary to dissolve the political groups or parties that are connecting them to the main and assume powers amongst themselves.
What advantages and/or disadvantages are there is such a course of action?
The movement of various nations to break away from the US is associated with several unforeseen disadvantages. For instance, it is likely to cause more problems in the power struggles amongst themselves, an increase in the expenditure to fund politics and establishment of political structures (National Public Radio). However, the advantage with their pursuit of the breakaway is that they will have a chance of exercising sovereignty over their own internal matters.
