Atlantic Slave Trade Era
In the 17th Century, slaves became the center of trade between European countries and Africa. The number of slaves traded during this era grew significantly. Suppose you lived in West Africa during this time, you were at a greater risk of being enslaved. The area was a main source of slaves (Curtin 63). In addition, male slaves were in demand and based on the images, two-thirds of those enslaved and traded were men. There are powerful Africans who were engaged in the business and were making lots of money from the trade. If you found yourself at their mercy, there is nothing you would do, but to be transported to Europe where slaves worked in huge plantations. Africans provided the labor needed in the agricultural sector in Europe that began in Brazil, North America, and the Caribbean during this era.
Living as a slave meant that people were bonded using chains before being transported via ships to their destinations. Powerful Africans who engaged in the slave trade built huge castles for themselves. They engaged in domestic slavery. Men, women, and children were linked via chains and wooden yokes. African guards were armed with guns to shoot anyone who tried to escape. This is the life people would have experienced suppose they lived in the 17th century. Arabs also raided communities in search of slaves and ivory. People were forced to flee their homes and seek refuge in the forests but in vain. They were eventually caught.

Africans cultivate their lands then upon harvest, slave traders conducted raids and seized people and crops. Though many Africans were enslaved, their endurance is what created the resilient African-American community during a time when racism dominated Europe.
