Authoritarian versus Totalitarian Autocracy
In general, autocracy is the type of governance in which only an individual or a small group of people lead the whole nation. Thus, totalitarian and authoritarian are the exact opposite of democracy. However, though leaders who employ the two styles operate like a dictator, there are significant differences between these regimes.
In the totalitarian autocracy, the power holder or the dictator has the charisma over his/her subjects. The people are lured to act according to the desires of their leader because they are attracted to his/her prophetic leadership (Longley). Therefore, a totalitarian leader shares some ideologies with the people. For this reason, the dictator can rule the entire nation by taking advantage of the sense of connection that exists between him and the subjects (Longley). Examples of the world’s renowned totalitarian rulers include Adolf Hitler of Germany, Benito Mussolini of Italy, and Joseph Stalin of USSR.
By contrast, authoritarian autocracy is a kind of leadership where a leader is driven by control and highly focused on the status quo. In fact, unlike totalitarians, authoritarians have the appearance of a power-hungry dictator because such rulers see themselves as individual beings (Longley). Additionally, an authoritarian government imposes power on their subjects through loyalty and fear. This loyalty is gained by offering rewards to people who cooperate. On the other hand, since power is consolidated and concentrated on a single authority, authoritarians suppress those who are opposed to their rule (Longley).

Furthermore, to make people cooperate to achieve a particular goal, authoritarian leaders use mass organizations and political parties. Examples of authoritarians are Marcos Ferdinand of the Philippines, Uganda’s Idi Amin Dada, and Saddam Hussein of Iraq.
