The Great War and the Spread of Fascism in Europe.
Question 1.
The economic conditions in Europe after World War I, formed an ideal breeding ground for the development of fascism. The economic depression that occurred from 1929 after the stock market crash, affected both American and European nations. The climate of high unemployment rates and social turmoil took control in many countries. The socialist and the Marxist parties rose against the industrialist parties that always had the support of the church. Benito Mussolini took advantage of the political and the social crisis in Italy to form the Fascist regime (Fussell, 2009). Fascism was an ideology that combined many other doctrines such as productivist, nationalistic and the elitist ideologies. Mussolini made sure that the innate violence that was associated with his regime remained invisible so that he could be admired by many people because of the public works programs, the discipline and the order that he had instilled upon his country. Germany felt humiliated by the Treaty of Versailles as it was forced to compensate the allies for all the damage they had incurred due to the World War I.
Germany was also facing a severe economic depression like many other countries in Europe. Many leaders in Europe associated this great depression with the failures of capitalism. Adolf Hitler allied with the extreme right industrialist to stop the spread of communism in Germany.

Therefore, he also adopted the fascist ideology. With the application of the fascism ideology, Adolf Hitler was able to do away with all forms of opposition and was named the Chancellor (Fussell, 2009). Many countries in Europe were also facing difficulties due to the great depression. They had the desire to be prosperous and orderly, so when they saw Hitler’s Germany and Mussolini’s Italy showing some signs of social and economic reconstructions, the leaders in the other countries decided to adopt the fascist ideology. Many countries in Europe developed fascism policy, and it spread throughout Europe.
Question 2.
The phrase “War to end all war” was used by H.G Wells and many other idealists to refer to World War 1 because they had hoped that the destructiveness of the war would convince leaders throughout the world to abandon war as a way of solving conflicts (Fussell, 2009). President Woodrow Wilson also thought that the war was a catalyst for promoting democracy throughout the world. So that democracy could be adopted across the globe, President Woodrow argued that the war should end in peace without victory whereby the central powers involved in the disagreement would agree to negotiate peace.
He, therefore, advocated for the formation of an international organization that is meant to keep the peace. The war was also referred to as the “Great War” because of its political, social and the cultural effects throughout the world. Many European nations wrecked their economies with the efforts to fund the war with the aim of winning to prove their supremacy (Fussell, 2009). Lethal weapons such as machine guns, aircraft, tanks and chemical weapons were used during the war. The war also changed the world cultures as many poets and writers expressed their experience during the war in a way that the passionate, starring and the dark side of the war has dominated the world memory. The First World War was the first war to have been fought in the cruelest and inhumane manner, and the end of the war marked the beginning of a modern era.
