The decline in contemporary, intimate relationships is negatively influencing the progress and sustenance of marriages. The high rates of divorce elaborate on the declining units of relationship or marriage. Currently, 40% of the marriages end up in divorce or separation in the USA (Abate and Piero 10). Sociologists opine that intimate relationship must showcase critical characteristics to succeed in the long-term. Commitment, trust, interdependence, and mutuality edify the qualities of sustainable intimate relationships. Interdependence among couples ensures that their needs are met while ensuring the independence since each person is different.

The stage elaborates the need for a social framework among couples. The evolution of friendships into intimate friendships, follow a distinct process. The framework builds emotional support, trust, shared interests, and practical financial assistance. However, physical attraction encourages the utilization of sex between cross-sex individuals. Same-sex intimate dynamics are unlikely to even with the rise in same-sex relationships. Sexuality plays a pivotal role in the formation of intimate relationships, with cross-sex relationships being common. Experts opine that cross-sex friendships decline over time after marriage. Exclusivity between couples, make it difficult for couples to develop more cross-sex friendships.
