The statistic that I have chosen deals with the life expectancy at birth, aged 65 and 75 years considering sex and race between 1900 and 2015 in the United States. Life expectancy is the statistical number of years that an individual is supposed to spend on this planet before he or she dies (Oeppen & Vaupel, 2002). I chose this statistic to gain an understanding on the average number of years that people have been living during this duration that has been characterized by world wars, a great depression, terrorism, and rapid advancement in technology (Carlington & Taylor, 2007).
The primary trend that has been enumerated by this statistic is that females of all races have a slightly higher life expectancy when compared to their male counterparts (West et al., 2014). The life expectancy of the 1900s is slightly lower compared with the life expectancy of the early 2000s which is a bit higher. This disparity can be explained by some factors such as the advancement in technology in the medical sector and improved nutrition. Female Hispanics of all ages have a higher life expectancy compared to black females.
What is interesting from this statistic is the extent to which females have to outshine males in terms of life expectancy despite them being perceived as weaker sex when compared to men. Women have proven that they can endure adversity and survive for long comparing with men under similar circumstances (Solinge & Henkens, 2009).

The statistics are not a surprise in any way because biologists have done much research that has consistently shown that women have stronger immunity then men. This partly explains why they have a high life expectancy and hence the figures from the statistic were not expected to deviate from such a reality.
