Choosing Courses at University

I believe that students joining the universities are capable of choosing their courses of study freely because if it were me with the same opportunity, I would choose a course that best fits my interests. Worldly, there are huge numbers of students advancing to higher levels of education in colleges and universities. A challenge lies in deciding what particular course one would undertake. Mostly, these students end up relying on their parents, teachers, relatives and their close friends to chose for them the course of study without critically analyzing what they could do best. Moreover, students are even forced to abandon a particular field and venture in other areas that don’t have ogre well with their abilities, potentialities, knowledge and will power.
From my point of view, choosing freely the best course of study is making an individual decision without being forced or influenced by parents, teachers, close friends or even relatives. Making a free choice depends on one’s abilities to take a particular direction or stand in an issue in a way that isn’t influenced by outside bodies. An example of a free choice I made was never to be involved in substance abuse at any level in my life. In the current society, many factors may influence one into taking drugs such as peer influence, curiosity and house parties that are on the rise among the youth. Despite these temptations and friends’ influences, I chose not to abuse drugs.
I formed my belief regarding the free choice following some various situations in my teenage level.

Initially, I believed that the instances in life follow a strict set up of systems that every individual follows despite their rank, age, and gender. I was in a class where every other person had a sexual partner or was in a teen relationship. I was highly tempted to fall into the same trap since the immediate society expected me to indulge in such activities. Although everyone was curious to engage in such activities, I critically analyzed the dire consequences that arise from early sexual encounters such as unplanned pregnancies, effects on academic performance and contracting various diseases. Following this, I chose not to participate in such relationships. As a result, I came to the realization that life instances happen from willpower and free choice of an individual rather than from a set system.
When I say that I believe in free choice, I am assuming that students joining colleges and universities have an absolute knowledge and understandings of their life regarding their interests, career choice and the current trend in the economy. Students, therefore, have a broad range of courses to choose freely in various colleges and universities.
There are several reasons, pieces of evidence, and arguments that support my belief in free choice. First, I hold that we are all tied to the responsibilities and outcomes of our choices thus making each aware of the decisions they take. A student will be more committed to his/ her studies basing the fact they chose that particular field on their own thus committing all their efforts, energy and concentration to succeed. The aspect of accountability and responsibility among students directs one in taking alternatives that are more sensible. Therefore the choices made out of surroundings influence have no meaningful measures for accountability and responsibility. Also, there lacks a definite purpose in life if all decisions and actions were set up by an established system that mandates one to act in a certain way. It steals one’s ambition to grow and adopt meaningful ways of excellence. A student would find it a norm just to go through an education system as it is a requirement. A choice made by external bodies creates insignificant importance in the mindset of the students thus resulting into poor and stagnant growth.
Another point of view, in this case, might be the fact that most of the course choices are from the influence of career advisories and representatives in the corporate world. For a student to make a concrete decision, the facts and realities in the industry displace one’s free will. For instance, one may have a strong will in a field that is no longer marketable or that has turned out to be irrelevant. Due to this, one will choose a different one out of circumstances.
After examining different points of view and critically evaluating the reasons, evidence and arguments that support various perspectives, my conclusion about free choice is that students have strong capabilities and power in deciding which course to take. However, some factors limit this kind of decision making.
