Climate Change
Climate change has become one of the biggest concerns to countries around the world where different stakeholders have joined hand in the campaign to reduce the greenhouse emissions and reduce global warming. According to scientists and experts in climate change working in International Institutions and Global Governance Program (2013), global warming is one of the biggest threats that is facing the world with statistics from the American Meteorological Society indicating there are 90% chances that the global temperatures will rise from 3.5 °C to 7.5 °C in the next one hundred years (International Institutions and Global Governance Program np). Additionally, though the changes might seem small or insignificant, they have great effects on the Earth’s surface as they could cause weather patterns and famine as well as influence the rise in the sea level among other changes that could threaten life in the world. In spite of the United States is ranked among the largest contributors to climate change, they have been among the countries which have been reluctant to support the campaign around the globe due to reasons associated with technology, the economy as well as politics.
Consequently, whether it is for reasons associated with technology, economic or political factors that promote pollution, they are all interconnected as the main factors as to why the United States does not support the efforts. On the issue of the economy, the United States is among the countries in the world that rely on heavy industrialization where these industries are the biggest emitters of the greenhouse gas emission.

In case the country supports the efforts by the stakeholders to protect the environment and prevent climate change through conferences such as Kyoto Protocol, it means that they have to reduce the emissions from their industry which will adversely affect their economies. For this purpose, the government of the United States has to consider how the reduction of emission from the industries will affect their economy and choose not to support the efforts by other developed countries. Similar, it has made other developed countries such as Canada and Russia to threaten to withdraw from the agreements (International Institutions and Global Governance Program np).
In the case of the technology supporting the efforts for reducing the greenhouse emission, it would mean that they have to transform their industries to be environmentally friendly. The costs for transforming and innovation are high that it will be costly for them to make the change. Besides, the competition in terms of technology around the world is making countries reluctant to support the climate change as it means the country will lose a lot in terms of technology that are not environmental friendly. The United States economy is also a controlled capitalist which entirely depends on technological advancement which might not be favored by the environmental conservations. Big corporations such as motor vehicle industries as well as telecommunications will be forced to invest in innovations which will be much costly.
In conclusion, when it comes to political factors, the country being a capitalist country, corporations play a big role in the politics of the day where they fund politicians who support their initiatives. Supporting climate change efforts will raise concerns from different corporations as they will lose business. As a result, politicians might oppose any bill that proposes to reduce greenhouse emissions to gain the favor of the business world. Besides, supporting climate change initiative efforts do not fall under the national interest of the country hence it is not a priority. The country is always known to put its national interest first thereby refusing to cooperate with other nations on matters that do not specifically affect the nation. In summary, whether it is because of technological, economic or political reasons, the main reason for the United States’ failure to cooperate narrows down to the national interest.
